Still never sounds as good as a real induction kit though. The only annoying thing is if you do destroy your airbox by drilling it you can't exactly put them back together which you might want to do in the future.
I dont see that you will gain any BHP from drilling the air box. Perhaps it will make a nicer sound. However I'd try it with a spare box first. The ideal scenario would be an enclosed free flow element sucking cold air from out side. If someone can confirm this will give a BHP gain and not sound to Novaish I'll give it a go.
never heard a gti 16v sucking all the air in the earth surface!?then you just don't know what vw is made of i have a 86,so just got that plastic thing out
Do it do it do it.A drilled box sounds better than an induction kit cos the sound can echo in the box If you drill the box it probaly wont make a difference in power BUT Run a cold feed of air from down in the bumper in the line of airflow to the airbox and you WILL notice a difference. Do you notice your car always feels better when its cold in the evening?? NUFF SAID
mine made 158bhp [kr with just a magnex system] at stealth on a 3 paper element with no drillings in the airbox.
Well mine was restricted by 5bhp as it gained this much when it was opened up on the RR at TSR last fri.
Dads just bought me this in America hopefully he should be sending it over next week, Im not expecting massive if any gains to be honest its as much for the noise as it is performance , I guess a vented wing would compliment it, Im trying to find a Bonrath big bumper air intake to give it a nice cold supply however theyve stopped making them now [:^(] , Ill post some better pictures and comments when it arrives. Air box Pete
Also if ppl dont think it will make a difference, how does a 16v make more power than 8v?? MORE AIR BY ANY CHANCE?
You're correct that flowing more air allows potentially more power, but in this case the point is that the airbox isn't restricting airflow significantly (or at all) compared to other components in the system. There's no point increasing the amount of air you can pass at this point, just for it to be stuck at a bottleneck further down. Imagine an F1 engine running through a 2CV exhaust for example...
