@ Nige and Gurds, I have a set of abf rods with arp bolts in my old abf block. The engine has only done 1000 miles since rebuild and bolts were new. The pistons are mahle oversized 9a and the rods were rebushed to accept these. If you get stuck and they are of any use to you, let me know. Would be a shame to leave them sat there if someone can make use of them. Just a thought.
Very true Didn't know Nige won rods in an auction so the cost should be more therefore negating the argue about being the cheapest of the cheap rods We all do our best and share the fun and sadness that's the whole point of a forum plus some good banter
Looking more and more like the bolts being at fault all the time I think the small end going was a bit of a red herring Wonder if it was due to the bolts stretching would be very hard to prove Gurds sorry to hear your had the same problem as nige
Sorry to hear about Gurds failure too... sounds similar.. interesting to read all the comments... Personally I think this "banter" is getting just that, too personal with sarcy comments Everyone's circumstances are different and yes hind-sight is good for reflecting but fore-sight? I believe a person will always make a decision (informed or not) due to the best of one's ability / thought process/ circumstances and lots of other influencing factors! I don't see everyone else trying this "thought out/informed budget approach" and sharing their experiences with the cgti masses. Nige / Gurds.. As a VW enthusiast (albeit not nearly as good with the Engine / DIY skills), I enjoy reading your threads and almost always come back having learnt something new or having felt a part of this CGTI "family". Is that not the point of this forum? I think most would agree, we all empathise when we hear about a fellow members ups and downs! These experiences are always good to read about and may help people like me for any future builds! I'm sure Nige's Aero Wonder and Gurds's mighty Red will be back in no-time!
How many Club members have you just blindsided with that comment? This forum is jam packed with pin-point accurate information and data from many contributors, designed to save people time and money with their projects. Broaden your Club GTI thread horizons man!
That'll be why putting these things up on a forum is useful then.....n=2 now........ Sorry to hear about your car Gurds
'Everyone' was the key word there Chris.. Obv I'm not going to commend and mention every member /thread because that would be pointless and exhausting.. Just seemed lto me like the latter part of the thread was spent focusing on the 'hindsight' and sarcy comments.. Hence my interjection.. Agreed there is loads of useful and informative stuff posted by many forum users. I have 'broad' horizons and find myself reading various threads on cars/engines in various guises including yours
Thanks for clarifying The point about hindsight / foresight is simple insofar as some people will not entertain goods below a certain perceptional standard. I am also not sure that anyone on Club GTI was asked about the type of rods before they were bought. I knew nothing about it.
Then stop moaning so much it does every bodies heads in Chris you know a lot and have a great library of information a nice car but you keep going when people have had enough You're not club gti's protagonist you're part of the club a democratic organisation of gti Nutters all different all equal It's not animal farm lol Please play nice with us other children
It's not animal farm? Well a Chinese cracker went off in someone's face and they complained. As if they had a right? By a cheap watch of a bloke in the market and complain when it doesn't work. Just really. Some sense of middle perspective would go a long way here. You get what you pay for.
A tag watch cost say 2000 a tag copy costs 50 a nice Seiko costs 200 You expect the tag copy to be rubbish but some are ok The Seiko on the other hand is almost as good as the tag just doesn't have the advertising and backup/ hype
Have you seen Danster about, Trev? That mind of fantastic information who knew so much about oily parts off the bat, it hurt. If he'd been around, he might have been able to advise Nige and Toyotec on ABF piston inserts
