for a 16v mk2 is it worth it ? and any info on where to machine to lighten it without weakening it and how much to take off? I know someone who'll do it for me cheap I rekon so since I'm gonna have the box off anyday soon ...
Speak to Hotgolf on here - he does mine (and many others) flywheels and gearbox builds. The lightened flywheel makes a massive improvment on a valver lump. Revs so freely with it.
Get it balanced to the clutch and make sure whoever does it knows what they're doing and where to remove the material from, safely. Makes a good beheading device does an errant flywheel.
racepower will do it too. And as gary says, doing it wrong is properly dodgy. Flywheels spin fast, so if its not done right it may well break up! Edited by: jimmy8v
not an easy site to find on google for some reason qep quite popular with some of the peugeot boys and if my brothers previous 2 engines have been anything to go by, they do some good work.
I'm not paying over the top prices for a job I can get done for next to nowt with the info I need such as how much off and where the guy I know has a fully kittedf out worksop as he builds motorbikes from scratch if need be
prob need to know what ideal weight needs to be, I remember doing it for my old beetle ,it had to be 12 - 13 lb.
Was thinking of doing this also. I have a spare flywheel still attached toa f**ked bottom end and was thinking of getting it lightened/balanced to be fitted to my current valver when the clutch is replaced. GVK, is the balancing to the clutch v.important? Was going to get Stealth to do the clutch change, and get the WUR mod/rolling road setup done at the same time. Is it worth me getting the flywheel lightened first or should i get Stealth to recommend somebody for me and leave it all to them? PS. What type of tool do you need to remove the clutch/flywheel? (looks like a smaller version of the tool i have for driveshaft/head bolts). Cheers!
what i "meant" to say was it looked like a "socket" version of the head bolt / driveshaft bolts . Just been and checked andi can confirm... a 9mm 12point ring spanner fits like a glove! Cheers 16vBanger Edited by: Boost16v
He might be able to build a bike from scratch, but does he know where and how to lighten a VW flywheel safely ?
Well duh that's why I am trying to get info before I turn up witha flywheel you know like to know how where it's normaly lightened from so when I go and see him I can see what he say's and base my decision on that Rather than pay how much ?? for a lightened flywheel by XXX company with no delay's ie if I turned up last night at my mates the flywheel would be done no waiting for postman prat etc can you see why I want info yet ????
Yeah, i'm sure we all can. But it's very difficult to describe exactly how much to take off and exactly where from. A good start is to take the raised ridges down to a level casting, but anything past that and it's a bit of a gamble if the machine operator knows little about doing it. I wouldn't gamble with a 7200rpm 3Kg flywheel.
We're not being awkward 16vbanger,but really,it's not something you can just hack a load off and say, ahhh cheap as chips, that'll do. Food for thought. But, if none of that bothers you,I'm sure there are some pics on here of my flywheel somewhere. They're on this thread. http://www.clubgti.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=74735&KW=at lasmk1 Edited by: GVK
i.e. how much to take off and from where) is exactly what I'm trying to find out I trust my guy with my life for sure and since I've just done the gearbox and clutch it can wait till next year But it will be getting a lightend flywheel soon for at most 10 for the work for me how much is a shop done one ? a darn sight more than 10
