There is, on the side - same size as the drain plug. I never bother with it though - just drain it and put in two bottles of Redline. Unless you're losing oil from it, it'll be the right level.

I'll need to fill my gearbox soon as well, I had MTL in it but don't know if I can be arsed to stretch to it again. I've got some API-GL4 80W-90 stuff, what would be the downsides of filling with that and is it ok to mix it with MTL?

The Golf Owners Manual I have just says to use API-GL4, SAE 80.

Stick with MTL. If you're used to how the box feels with it in you'll hate it running on mineral stuff unless the gearbox is mint.

What's the price difference ? A tenner if you get it from C and R ?

Spend the money. You know it makes sense !

Hmm, I've got loads of new mineral stuff in the garage taking up space, I paid about a quid a litre for the stuff (mate in the distribution place). It's either going in my box or up the tip, I haven't got room anymore!

2 quarts of MTL are gonna set me back 23 + VAT + Delivery. Spose it's not that horrific.

What about the VW synthetic stuff? Any ideas on prices anyone?

    Cheers,
    Joe

Seems that the VW synthetic is around 12/litre so I'll probably go for that, saves me waiting around for delivery as well.

    Cheers all,

dont use the level plug unless you've got a post-87 valver. prior to 87 the plug was too low as it was intended for fitting a vehicle with 2degrees less inclination - hence you'd be under filling if you let it spil out.
after 87 they raised the hole...

yep the one on the front which is where you're supposed to fill it up.

DO NOT POUR IT INTO THE GREEN BUNG!

    I just bought my gearbox oil. VW P/N - G 005 000

    Called G50 - SAE 75W-90

I'm assured it's the synthetic stuff, is bright red.

Was 10.70 inc. VAT per litre.

    Cheers,
    Joe

If it stinks it's synthetic. If it smells like ordinary gear oil it's mineral.

If you jack the front of the car up you underfill it even more as the level plug is towards the back of the box. On pre 87 boxes use the TSC method of draining the old stuff and sticking 1.9 litres in through the speedo drive or reverse switch holes in the top.

    Close enough for jazz........nice !

I put my Redline in last night...

I'm now truely in love with the gear shift of the car... New box, quaiffe diff, ball jointed shift rods and new bushes, all lubed up with MTL. [l]

Checking the timing - if you pour it in there it kills your clutch......
