    Let us keep it simple. Make sure you have exited MSN messenger and then, START --> RUN the following command:

    RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\inf\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

    right click my computer and select manage, bottom of the list is a services and apps tab. from here select the services tab. scroll down to messenger and double click it. click on stop and select disabled for the startup type, click ok. job done

    ??

    Your talking about MSN messenger that comes with Win XP ?

    theres an option in OE (tools, options, General - automatically log onto Windows Messenger) that stops it running.

    It's slightly confusing. My answer will remove MSN messenger (and windows messenger)

    The other answer removes..umm..windows messenger service..a diferent thing altogeather...but in typical Micro$oft fashion the called 2 things the same name.

    aaaahhh i getchya. aint too sure as ive never used the full blown msn one, but looking under add or remove programs there is "MSN add-in for windows messenger" id assume thats just the windows one, i assume that if you have the MSN one thats listed seperately.

    It removes Windows messenger.. I use it all the time at work after a clean install.

    OR....

    To Remove Windows Messenger:

    Assuming you want to get rid of it and ensure that it doesn't pop up every time you boot into Windows XP then:

    If you'd like Windows Messenger to show up in the list of programs you can add and remove from Windows, then goto to C:\WINDOWS\inf (or your drive) and open sysoc.inf and you'll see a line that reads:

    msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7

    Change this like below and you can remove it for good:

    msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,7

    Then it appears in the add/remove list of windows components so you can uninstall it from there.

    highlight messenger service
    click on Properties at top of page (paper with hand on top icon)

    Thats not Windows Messenger... thats MESSENGER ... basically it transmits BS from ya PC and allows companies to put pops direct to ya PC... without using IE.

    Open CMD copy this into it

    RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

    like the bloke above said!

    My god, I'm glad I'm a mostly a Mac user. I mean I'm open minded
    enough to know that there are horses for courses etc, and I use various
    platforms for work, but if I wanted to uninstall MSN messenger on my
    laptop, I have to drag its icon to the trash. What a chore. :lol:

    yeah but msn messnager windows messanger and the windows messanger service are all different things

    msn messanger is a free download on the net windows messanger is a program very similar to msn messanger but is installed with windows xp

    and windows messanger service is some crappy program that lets network users send messages to clients

    except people on the internet send them instead and urine you off all day

    i heared that you couldnt uninstall windows messanger but from the posts above im guessing im wrong
