Thank you very much for your time and trouble to take the pictures! Gives me some ideas. I'll get these printed out to show the builder when I'm chatting with him
Right, lately I've been wondering if it's possible to design the roof so that I can gain extra head room inside, above the 2.5m wall height. Two truss manufacturers I've spoken to both say that they can make me a raised-tie type truss that actually gives me an extra 500mm (with the width narrowed to 2.2m at the highest point). The designs have thicker upper chords (I think that's the right term?) so that they are still suitable for the building and the tiles being used, etc. This means that I could have a maximum ceiling height of 3m, which would let me just about get a lift of some sort in there. So I'm back to toying with the idea of a two-post again, though I know I'm bonkers. The sort of things I've been looking at are this and this. Only problem is that I'd then lose any roof storage space I could have had. But then again, with a raised ceiling, at one end of the garage (say, perhaps at the front) I could build a storage platform. Problem with having a lift in there is that I'd have no room for the hoist idea discussed above (because the posts tend to be very tall), but I could still perhaps put just one RSJ in and have a hoist that moves side to side, which is more useful than nothing.
As it stands today: I got the roof trusses ordered. As planned I got the raised tie trusses ordered for one half of the garage to give me 3m ceiling height so I can have a lift.
Is it a single skin of brick with blocks reinforcing it? I always imagined a cavity wall but a single skin would be a good foot bigger on the inside.
Now up to wall plates! Next week, the brick gables are built and the trusses are delivered and fitted.
Nice We've been looking at the idea of getting a two poster lift here aswell, seems a bit OTT but anything to get off the cold floor with cr@p in my eye, lol.
I've been dreaming about two-posts, though my mate has been trying to convince me to look at four-post instead. People are divided over their opinions on which is best. Both have their pros and cons. The most attractive one at the moment to me is this one: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Four-Post-Car-Lift-Compact-4-Post-Ramp-3-5m-x-2-5m_W0QQitemZ270444819642QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Lifting_Moving_Equipment?hash=item3ef7c474ba Amazingly, its footprint is just 2.5m by 3.5m. This is their smallest model, for smaller vehicles. I could fit it in, and possibly still have a bit of workbench space at the side still. They also supply beam jacks for it. I decided to get the extra headroom in the roof just in case I do get one.
Well worth the extra headroom even with no lift as you said earlier its great storage for smaller items if you put another floor in. We have a long way to go before we can consider a lift, its a old cattle barn with various panels missing so needs some work. I was just looking at buying up a second hand one with a full service history. Last year with all the dealerships and garages closing down 400quid for a 'good' one was about right, all 3 phase though so can be expensive to get wired up.
Looks ****. But should be easy enough to break into with those massive oversize windows, which also restrict your wall hangin space. Nice one
The windows were mismeasures being sold extremely cheaply, so I am not complaining Plus there needs to be some way for your mum to get in.
have you thought about a scissor lift ?, no posts, just dig out a 4 foot square hole, place lift in,bolt down. jobs a gooden,
