There are plenty of cars out there that use bike engines (some lighter but still reliable & heavily used). http://www.daxcars.co.uk/rush/reviews/index.htm http://www.megabusa.co.uk/ http://biketransplant.tripod.com/links.htm http://www.super7cars.com/Super7_GSX1300R_Hayabusa.html Anyway it's on ebay now: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Mk1-Golf-Hayabusa-Turbo-RWD_W0QQitemZ220140262901QQihZ012QQcategoryZ9873QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
from the above post, get the impression that bike engines maybe lighter, aiding overall weight of car!!! if so, going back to original point why dont most modders use em. would suit mk1s/mk2s more than, say a vr6 block!!! i bet they're more freely available as well, and must fit the bays just as well!!! there must be something that prevents modders from choosing car engines from what seems like the obvious choice!!!
Yer the additional 10k you have to spend uprating everything/custom fitting things like steering racks, driveshafts, manifolds etc etc. Just isn't worth it. If you can do it yourself converting a mk2 golf to run a vr6 lump or 9a lump is pretty cost effective power.
Based on the Radicals that most commonly use bike engines, you normally only get a limited number of HOURS before you need a rebuild. It's purely the revs that kills them, and the extra pressure from the turbo forcing the rings into the cylinder wall wont help i'm sure. But the power is totally achievable. Three years ago i drove the Radical SR8 Turbo at Brunters and that had 350bhp then. Now it's more common to bolt two bike engines together in a V8 configuration if you want big power. This see's 400bhp out the box, but costs approx 16,000! So the turbo route is far more cost effective for the power, but less reliable. Also the engine was built by Holshot racing, they have been doing these type of engines for years, so it's nothing new.
knew there was some proper reason for not using bike engines!!! maybe ok with pushing along the weight of a bike, but even a l/w 600Kg car is heavy for em!!!
Guess what's up for sale?!! http://www.visordown.com/motorcycle...rce=newsletter_20071002&utm_medium=newsletter
not with a big turbo like that stock one looks pretty healthy, a great big lump of midrange torque from that turbo will be awesome dyno run edit, found turbo dyno run turbo dyno run anyone care to post a stock 1.8 8v to compare?
From that article: 'Making around 350bhp and weighing in at just 595kg, this Golf has a power to weight ratio of 588bhp per ton - more than the McLaren F1.'
