Was there any option to finalise the dvd?

Yep, option given and it did it when stopping the recording process.

Only hint I have is the PC appears to be trying to read a CD, not a DVD on the auto start.

Hmmm sounds like it's not recognising it for sure. Could just be a fussy dvd rom drive that can't read certain types of recordable DVD media. Try it on another pc if you can

Did it make it a proper DVD? Not like a div-x and you need the codec?

How can I find out? It was as straightforward as pressing record and stop, and it will play on the DVD ok.

Can you stop the autoplay and right click and explore the disc or is it not simply even getting to that point?

You have a Dell too don't you? I remember that Dell used a DVD drive that didn't like DVD-R's a while back in the inspirons. If you look in Device manager and see what model of drive you have and also let us know what the dvd media is. That could be the issue if it's not even reading the disc properly.

If it's recognising it as something else then as Mat said it could be a Div-x format or something that you need codecs for.

Tried it again. Seem to be in business [8D]

Now have 2 folders on the DVD:

VIDEO_RM - has one video file inside, 'VIDEO_RM'
    VIDEO_TS - has three video files inside, 'VIDEO_TS', 'VTS_01_0' & 'VTS_01_1'

Which one to pick / convert to Avi - to then edit in Moviemaker?

VTS_01_1 is the largest file by miles, assume that's it.

=> converting it to Avi via Prism.

    Wow, Thats actually quite good!

Short play was a better quality setting i think, But obviously longer to convert.
I cant see much wrong with that to be honest.

I have a load of family VHS to convert one day.

I'm about to convert another DVD. To get it into Moviemaker, I need to convert it from DVD format to avi, mpg, wmv, flv, mp4 etc.

The linked vid was done on AVI.

Is one of those ones weak on quality? What should I best choose?

I record onto DVD-RAM (same as DVD really but erasable) in short play (PCM sound format too) then encode it using TMPGE Xpress 4.0. There you can convert it into any format and quality. I've had great results.

Judging from last night's efforts, it went up onto youtube at 480p.

I think I need to understand & optimise this further before doing anything more, as anything less than 720p or 1080p seems careless these days.

Any experiences on the max that can be got from VHS though?
