Is there meant to be a balance weight on the O/S driveshaft on an 89 8v GTi

I have this humming noise that starts at about 50mph and gets louder as I speed up

I read in a thread that the driveshafts could be the problem...............??

what could be wrong with them??

I have replaced the wishbone bushes, front wheel bearings, shocks & springs, Strut top mounts, bottom ball joints, rear wheel bearings.

all the tyres are in good condition, the hanbrake cables are secure and not touching the tyres

I will be changing the tie rod ends when I get time as the rubbers are perished

Any ideas what is causing the noise, it can get very loud at around 70mph,

I dont know if this helps but it seems to be directional, it gets quieter when i turn to the right on a motorway corner

Classic signs of a front wheel bearing. Gets quieter on right hand bends because its unloading that bearing.

could be your tyres, i had a bad humming noise from 40mph upwards and it was solved when i replaced the tonk tyres that were on the car.

Is the noise a constant drone, or does it say make one noise every rotation of the wheel, which becomes a drone type noise with the increase in speed?
I had a cv boot split, which made quite a lot of noise suprisingly, and would stop and start depending on where the wheels were pointing.

well... i had a humming from my 8v, over 50 mph. it ended up being a perished exhaust rubber mounting. Check out exhaust make sure no leaks etc. What about tracking.
I reckon if it was the drive shafts, being in bad condition, then the cvs would have probabley popped by now.

Sounds like wheel bearings to me and i know you have changed them but has the torque been set correctly? Was this noise apparent before youchanged the wheel bearings?

New exhaust and new exhaust rubbers, the noise was there before the new exhaust and rubbers were fitted as well

yes the noise was there before I replaced the bearings,

The hub nut is torqued to 295 NM, the rear is hand tight so the thrust washer can just be moved without levering it, there is no excessive endfloat

More seriously... does the noise change if you dip the clutch...could be a gearbox bearing on the way out.

Or if you take the car out of gear...

nope the noise is constant, no change to the noise if i dip the clutch,

However I have a new problem as well now.........................[:^(]

Sort of a grinding noise when I turn the steering wheel, sounds like the noise is coming from inside the car, well from the steering wheel?

Well, the normal rule is, if you have a new problem, you look back at the last thing you changed.

From your description of the sound, it does sound like you still have a bearing problem.

If it was gearbox, then the noise would probably vary with engine speed, rather than road speed.
