Could it just be the oil left in there? It's not as bad as it was.

    Or....the head gasket? *shudder*

What about overfuelling - too much fuel and not enough air? What position should the mixture screw be on the AFM? And where should the idle screw be?

good question! luckily I've never managed to get either of these far enough out for it to be a problem, if you didnt touch these before you took engine apart I wouldnt expect them to need much adjustment? on my 16v its possible to get these out enough for it to not start, but usually a bit of throttle gets em going and you just have to hold the revs up till you get it running ok ish on its own, then get down to the fiddling

oil all over the plugs sounds really odd. not had that problem before.
lots of fuel you say? the ecu is ok? not blown?
the knock sensor needs to be on surely, otherwise the ign. timing will be out by too much to start the car? dont do it up too tight. i got a new one off ebay for about 35 as mine looked shot.

well the knock sensor doesnt do anything till it 'hears' knock, so it wont matter if its not there. even if it does hear knock all the ecu does is back off the timing from the std setting

try backign off the idle screw a bit, worst case is the idle will be too high, and you can wind it back in later.
