Perhaps an option is to buy a cheap car and run that for a year (or
two!) and keep the Golf under your mums name until then (use for
    weekends etc).

either bite the bullet and insure the golf on your own-thats going to hurt your wallet!
or stick in the garage and get a cheap run around to build up your NCB.

does your mum not drive the beast at all, i have heard that insurance companies have got a little wise to people getting fast cars etc insured by mum and dad yet they never drive them. to the point where they won't insure them or raise the premium.

IMO HIC or Flux are going to give you about the best quote - dunno what else to suggest after them [:[]

TBH I'd forget all the mainstream "shopping trolley" insurers to begin with - some places refused to insure me on my stock valver with 6yrs NCB - t**sers [:x]
With 0 NCB and getting on for 300 ponies they'll either quote you silly or refuse insurance all together.

HIC are usually responsive to haggling - did you tell them that you'd been on your old dear's insurance for however long without a claim, that you've been driving the car for a while etc.. it all helps :)

HIC and Elephant wont consider me with 0 NCB.

Tried Firebond, they said with a gti lump in my car i'd be paying 450 per year, stock driver lump 400, but with that engine.... nothing [:^(]

2 years ago my Jetta VR6 was 1064 FC. My Golf VR6 is as i said, about half the price. Dread to think what it would be without NCB. Just be thankful you dont have points/accidents on record, as at least some insurers are quoting you.

If your being serious that you have no NCB, defo buy a 1.0L POS on minimal mileage. How old are you cause it will drop with age a bit after 25? That 18 - 25 bracket is a killer!

The only other insurance people I can think of, if they haven't already been mentioned, is Brentacre they might sort you out.

Alternatively I think you can do advanced driver training and some insurers will give you 1 yrs ncb which might help, but due to the car being heavily modded they might not accept it. [xx(]

Here's a plan. Insure it as a 1.6 Driver, leave it a week, and then tell them that you've just had an engine conversion!

If you've already paid the main premium and are a customer, the hike will actually be less :)

But you will have no idea what the 'hike' will be and will have to pay the extra. If you cancel then you will likely forfeit part of the premium too.

Brentacre quoted 2700 with 1000 excess [xx(]

Adrian Flux are the best at the moment with 2150 and 500 excess. Both insurance companies have agreed values of 12,000 on my car.

Looks like i might have to part with 2150 [8(]

Why don't you agree the value at 6000 and see if that makes a difference?

Then if you did loose the car you could buy a tidy gti for 1000 and then 5000 for another engine swap.

But it'd cost me at least 12,000 to actually get back what i put into it.

Say if it was a total write off, and i wanted an identical car, i'd have to pay for another 20vt conversion, all bodykit, arches totally smoothed off and repainted, whole car resprayed, all my suspension, roll bars etc, brake conversion, interior totally repaid for.

Which would cost 12k at least.

if you wrote it off, they'd pay out 6k, and you'd be able to buy back the crashed car for parts.. so it wouldnt cost you so much to build another.

luke - no i wouldnt, but thats not the point. I'd still want it resprayed because the example i'd find to replace it would most likely need one :)
