replacing the sump plug is a bit gratuitous!!

you might want some brake fluid and antifreeze on standby if you're doing a thorough job.

regards th ATF trick i was speaking to Alan White( autotechnik) the other day and he was saying that ATF has friction creating properties to enable the fluid to work correctly in the auto engine. this could be abbrasive to your engine if you put it in to flush it. he recommended using wynns or something designed to do the job. i was gonna try the ATF in my birds old banger but have decided against it. i know it would only be in the engine for a day or 2 but worry that residue may remain after the oil change.

if its a 8v then its a case of taking off the metal plate beneath the alternator that covers the thermostat housing. there are 5 13mm bolts that need taking off. with an extension bar attacked from below its easy.

getting the o ring on around the thermostat housing can be a wind up but if you stretch it ( carefully ) a bit larger than it is you should be able to slip it on ok.

Oh and is it worth doing an oil engine flush while doing the oil change? I dont know if its ever been done or not.

you'll find a lot of info on here about it. it basically uses the abrasive qualities of auto transmission fluid ( that you add to your old oil) to clear all the ***** out of your engine b4 an oil change

its a service, not an engine overhaul!!

unless matt-gti has lots or money and time, id recommend sticking to the service essentials

but good point highlighted by matt82 - the fuel filter is def one of the essential changes for a service.

if you do want to flush, id get a proper flush such as a Forte, and not the atf procedure.

still low milage then 84k, i would just try wynn oil flush. just b4 an oil change is the time to do an oil flush, to get any crud out of your engine.

do a search on the atf trick.

in short, running the car for 100 miles or so with about 0.5L of auto gearbox fluid added to your oil to clean all the crud out from the inside of the engine.

    very effective
