    Hi Guys,
Some of you may know, my exhaust is blowing at the manifold gasket, so I will be attempting this over the next few days.
Are GSF manifold gaskets ok to use? Also what do you guys soak the exhaust bolts with (WD40)?
    Thanks in advance.

is this manifold to downpipe or manifold to head?

i would say yes gsf gaskets are fine, soak them with pentrating oil if you have any other than that, use anything WD40, 3in1 etc..

i would give the studs a gentle tap with a hammer, just be sure to hit them square on.

yep you still gotta seal up that passage to the head, as long as its not a gti head without one? even without a 2e2 coolant still flows thru the manifold :)

    Thanks for your help/hints.
    I tackled this yesterday.
I didnt get the inlet manifold or exhuast manifold off just yet (thats because I didnt have a long allen key socket). Will 'borrow' one from work.
So I have only one inlet bolt & one exhaust bolt left to take off.
Should remove the manifold tonight, then I'll spend the week cleaning and refitting a new gasket.

Manifold & exhaust gaskets - with pictures

    Hey guys,
I finally managed to get the inlet manifold off. There was one more exhaust manifold nut left to remove, and its rounded. Its the nut below the O ring.
Any ideas how to remove the nut without damaging the stud or manifold.
Also I noticed there is a small crack on the exhaust manifold. Seen in the pictures below.

    Hi there,
No there arent any studs at the downpipe.
Its the standard manifold for a 1.6 L carb.
Its got two big C clips.

i would take a hack saw (read grinder) to the rounded nut and get a new stud for when you damage that one.

as for the crack it does look like its leaking, however neither did my gti, but once i cleaned up the port i could see the light literally,

bin it get a gti manifold and downpipe, with give you a little more go too

best bet is get one the same for a scrap yard
    if you cant get one
the gti one will fit you head but you will need the down pipe as well

this is the ideal time to buy yourself a dremel, you wont look back ;)
cut a slit in it gradually, when its almost thru tap a screwdriver into the gap, should open it up enough to crack loose. I take it you have already tried mole grips?

    Cheers guys,
I havent used mole grips, I will be borrowing a dremel from work.
Looks like I will be replacing my exhuast manifold, if I get a GTI one, do I also need the downpipe from the manifold to the centre box, or can I keep my orignal one?

Also what can I do about cleaning the coolant hole on the head. I've got the 'o' ring, but I just make sure it doesnt leak again.

I've got a spare 'toilet bowl' manifold from a Scirocco, which should fit your car. You can have it free if you come to Windsor and get it.

Is the aluminium on the head damaged where the o-ring sits? If so, you either need a new manifold, or use 'leak fix' or a 'liquid metal' type product to give a better sealing surface.

Doesn't look like the manifold was just blowing from the gasket then...

Ah ok thanks Mike, I will keep you informed.
So that manifold should fit on my head & fit to my downpipe?
From what I remember the inlet manifold looks ok (where the o ring sits).

Nah it looks like the exhaust manifold was blowing aswell.

gti downpipe is needed, and since it a 1.6 it wont fit the front silencer! least of your worries though as i dont think you would be able to get a gti mani/dp swap done with engine in anyway...

    not esay any way
i had the gasket for manifold to head go no my 8v gti
as the last owner had boged it and sheard one of the stud's
i changed the down pipe at the same time
i had to take the head off to fix the stud in the end as it was seard flush with the head
but this was a blessing as it made getting the down pipe in a lot easier
i think it can be done with the engine in but you need the car on a ramp
to get in with out messing with the subframe
or you can take the front engine mount and oil filter off and lower the engine forword
on a trolly jack to get more space at the back
just make sure you disconnect the gear linkage first
