    Hello everyone

i'm very new to Microsquirt, having bought the unit back in sept 08 for my prject only just got round to installing it on my VW GOLF GTI MK1 , running a 2.1L 16V Engine c/w 45mm Jenvey DTH Throttle bodies. [:D]

I've loaded all the programs onto the pc and purchased the USB Adaptor from DIYAUTOTUNE

The first and major problem i am having is the laptop will not connect to the Microsquirt ECU.

The comms port is showing port 18 connected and correct speed etc, ecu powered up on 12v dc supply but still will not connect :(

Is this a common problem :?: apparently any port over 10 will create an issue

I would surject buying a new USB adapter, i bought mine from amazon and it came with software (this is important) and it was only about 10 worked first time with my MS ECU.

The Microsquirt is same as Megasquirt 2 V3 set - up so should be straight forward. i thought anyway.

Did yours come with a software disc?

if not that will be the problem.

MS2 on version 3 PCB is really a MS1 with a faster CPU. Microsquirt is a surface mount PCB with a better enclosure. Your problem is the USB adaptor some work and some do not.

you can manually change the port number in windows device manager, have a look at what port numbers are already in use. worst case re-assign an existing port to a higher number and map your cable in its place.

I was just going to say what Rubjonny said above. On a USB to serial adapter that I often use for another purpose, the virtual COM port number actually changes, quite randomly, each time the adapter is plugged in. So it's worth looking at what port number has been assigned in device manager on a regular basis. The port you assign in MegaTune HAS to equal this port.

I find it quite bizarre that DIYAutoTune should supply an adapter that doesn't work with MS, considering they're selling it for the very purpose.

Looking at the forum's this seems to be the most common problem when using Megasquirt !

This one is the one i bought, as it comes with the al important software that is required to set it up and get it running.

    Good luck.

I'm aware that certain adapters don't work too well with MS, but I'd have thought that someone like DIYAutoTune would have been careful to supply one to you that is properly tried and tested with MS. Are the ones that DIYAutoTune supply known to sometimes not work?

Could you clarify what you mean "the comms port is showing..."? Is port 18 the port that Device Manager is telling you has been assigned to the USB device?

When you're in Device Manager, look at the COM ports, as opposed to USB devices. Within the COM ports you should find a new 'virtual' port belonging to the USB dongle. What is its number, and is that the number you've used in MegaTune?

Edit: Ah, you've ordered another one anyway. Reading the DIYAutoTune page you linked to, it's clear that he did a lot of testing on that type of dongle he supplied to you, and so I think it's still worth checking your configuration.

The com port in device manager was showing com18 and so was Megatune.

i have changed both to com1 and tested it no response and then done the same in com2, still no joy.

i will wait for the new USB Adaptor to arrive and try that. [:s]
