Anyone thought of using the EPAS system from a Corsa or Punto? You can get them ready to go for 150 then you're free to use any rack you want.

I've had a think about using this. A friend of mine is currently putting one on his 16v Mini, so I will wait and see how he gets on with it and see how easily it would be to fit to my mk2 Scirocco.

Seems like a great system, and like you say you can put it on any rack in theory......

Here goes:- believe it or not mr Eyre, my power steering was fitted by a company called Steering Development ltd. in Hemel Hempstead (according to the sticker on the rack (hats off to you)). I've had to recon the Power Steering Pump & Rack at a cost of 115 & 185. Steering Development Limited dont do this type of work anymore, but put me onto Power Steering Services in Greenwich 0208 8533343 who now do this type of work coincidentally this is the company that my local garage used to do the reconditioning.

Apparently my golf has a Steering Rack from a Nissan (nice 1 rubjonny) & a Power Steering Unit from a Rover, - but not sure which models. The only part no's I have were on the rack, & were: RI 53A00. Ill put a photo of the PSU on if anyone thinks they can identify it by sight being a possible Rover part probably not.

Basically Im happy as I have the Golf back with Power Steering on, but I am a bit cheddered that I havent completely identified the exact parts both for me to fix in the future & for the forum / anyone who wants to put Power Steering on their Mk1. (At least I havent got a strangled cat under the bonnet anymore).

Greenwich seems to be the place to get it done, with 2 companies that can do it there. Power Steering Services & Greenwich Car Parts.

So do we know about other mk1's that have had Nissan (bluebird) racks & power steering kits fitted (possibly tsr) ?

thanks for everyone's input - i wish it was the final products I had for you all ..

i spoke to power steering services. yes it was a nissan rack possibly sunny or bluebird & rover power steering. Can't tell me which & apparently its not much help as its been shortened to fit & completely modified to fit the golf. they also use renaults too - sound familiar ?

apparently there's no point me getting new ones & may as well just recondition it if it goes again because of the works involved.

there we go end of - it took me a year to find a mk1 cab with power steering & having had it a year thought i was gonna lose it ! relieved to be keeping it - i'd heard they existed but mines the only 1 i know of or seen.

thanks for the help - QUALITY forum !

I was in my local motor factors today looking at balljoints for my MK1. First Line list parts for a mk1 golf with power steering, trackrods and trackrod ends, both parts being different to non ps golf bits. I doubt they would do this for an aftermarket system. The parts listed were for all the mk1's including the caddy and cabby. They also fitted mk3 transporters, both air and water cooled. Maybe someone would care to look at the steering on a transporter? I don't know anyone with one.

ETKA does have a LHD power steering rack listed for 82-92 Sirocco, 82-84 Golf/Jetta & 84-92 Cabriolet. What year is the MK3 transporter?

Having looked on google, they seem to be 1982 onwards.

ETKA doesn't seem to show any parts for old Transporters :(

On an unrelated note, I sent an email to Wwestern Powersteering and asked them about that part #. They couldn't tell me what it came from but said they have seen a MK1 with a Nissan rack and another with one from a Renault :)

    mk2 scirocco

Interesting thread, I have a mk1 gti cabby and want to put power steering on )well my better half does).

My local VW specialist said that a mk2 scirocco rack would do the job, that is what he said he has seen used.

I will have to get back in touch with him to see how difficult a job it is and how much of the scirocco stuff needs modding.

Has anyone else heard about these parts being used as donors for mk1 power steering.

    Carl.
