Hi All, I am new here, so sorry about the dumb, covered before questions! My daughter will be 17 in under a year, so I am looking around for suitable cars (rather than an 1100 corsa!). We both quite fancy the Mk1 Gti. So the question is, are there specialist insurers that might insure her on it for a sensible amount of money, or am I wasting my time??!! Thanks in advance Graham
welcome andf to answer your q - not a chance best to start her of on somethin relatively un-potent tho isn't it? Edited by: acf8181
17 year old & gti, i wouldnt even bother even if they did insure her, its a recipe for disaster, i know someone who's dad bought her a corsa gsi, think it was within a week or two of her passing her test it was written off! whats wrong with a small engine car as a first car??
17 year old + GTI = silly premium! Get her a 1300 Mk1 or Mk2 for a year or two and then move on to the GTI when she's built up a bit of No claims bonus. None of the specialist insurers (HIC, Brentacre, Flux etc) will touch a 17 year old.
if you want an idea...i'd say get her a '95-'99 polo, there a good first car, and even the 1.6 is slow enough to be a sensible first car. only one i'd avoid is the 1.4 16v, as its fairly rapid.
Thought that would be the case with the insurance, but worth a question! Re the power/potency, she will have been driving an Impreza P1 for 3 years (up to advanced driver standard - she drives better than me) by the time she gets her licence, so she shouldn't have too much trouble. Graham
How things have changed when i was 17 an unmodded 1.3 mk2 cost me 850 third party, now 22 and im looking at Mk2 8v with 4ncb, protected at 750 fully comp. Steve
you're gettin ripped off...i only payed 950 this year (22, 4yrs ncd, fc) on my vr6, and at renewal next month i'm lookin at 550
Thing is, my renewal isnt due to november, and some quotes ive had have been really ott like 2000 from peoples choice and i aint gonna get a better deal by changing it now, so im better off staying where i am at the mo. I had quotes like that for a VR6 but i prefer the Mk2 over a Mk3, although a conversion may happen shortly. Steve
Finally... - that was probably in your name, and would likely cost the same now. ACF - it all depends where you live - I'd have been impressed with 750FC for a Mk2 8v when I was 22.
nope, not a rally driver, she goes to the Under 17 Car Club. This is her 3rd and last season where she will be at the Rospa/IAM standard and will have driven... A host of road cars including my P1 and Caterham Vans of various sorts 206 rally car 2-stroke karts landrovers off-road front and rear drive skid pan cars formula fords Fire engine 38 tonne artics A many more assorted vehicles! Graham
not a bad list that...take it she can heel and toe and left brake and stuff like that? like your choice of road/fun cars, if i had the money i'd have a scooby rb5 as an everyday car and a caterham as a weekend car. i've raced a fair few 16 years old who can drive better than a lot of my 22-24 year old friends!
When I was 18, I got my Mk2 8v Gti (having had a nissan bluebird for 6mnths). In mothers name with me as a named driver it was just shy of a grand, and i was suprised they even quoted me. That was with CIS. It won't get her any ncb, but it'll get her behind the wheel!
hi graham now i have no doubt u know your daughter far better than i do - (unless i was drunk ) but - there is a certain element of teenager that you have to accoutn for... a lot of "rich-kids" in the 80's were all bought mk1 gti and mk1 cabby's as their first cars. (i'm not saying she is a "rich-kid", you are clearly *comfortable* but i'm not here to judge, or be jealous.. ) most of the kids who got bought cabby's and mk1 gti's all then went on to crash them. many of these kids were great drivers with their parents, just as i was a great driver on my driving test (and don't speed with my nan in the car - she hits me with her walking stick when i do...) But - peer pressure is a wondrous thing, it makes a sensible driver do things a little less sensible. A friend of mine since school is and was an excellent driver - he is only slower than me on the road through bottle - i clearly have less of a danger instinct than him. I have never felt safer in a car than with him - but when we were young and drunk (he was sober) we got him to race someone and looking back he was pushing the limit. Purely because he was caught up in the moment.
however that wasn't your question try HIC - Herts Insurance. you may have to trust your daughter enuf to put her on your policy or your wife's if you even think twice about doing that - don't get he a mk1 gti. and yes i am a bit jealous - although the first car i ever drove was a droopsnoot firenza - far classier than these common P1 jap things....
