I have always (using the INA leaflet!) that came with my tensioner, and all the other 16v's engines, road+race that i've built, tensioned the belt from a clockwise direction.

For example, undoing the nut, turning the tensioner clcokwise, so it tensions the belt from nearer the cam sprocket. - I have NEVER had any failures with it done like that

Engien bay looks the nuts!

Great work. Not a fan of carbs on Golfs. Everyone seems to have problems with them. Hope they work for you.

I hope they work out too! lol:)

Its on carbs because i had them and me and wire don't go well together! Rebuilt and set up a webber DCOE 40 on my bro's 1300 mini and it runs well with dyno print out to prove it. In the future the plan is for omex ignition and after that TB's with an ABF bottom end.

I'm liking the build, very neat, very tidy. Humble apologies to your wallet for being an inspiration!

A couple of things which may head off initial gremlins:

    - the water pipe, up and over from the head, down to the water pipe - poss air lock issue? Any chance of lowering and losing the high arch?

    - also the alternator steady bar - keep an eye in case it needs something beefier. Mad 20v had a rose jointed affair playing up on his, and this is similar. Any lateral movement will cause hassle sooner or later.

Thanks chris, The water pipe could be cut down a little more, its a formed hose from a Samco kit, i have cut it down a little already did not want it to kink, dam Samco stuff is so much i wanted to use it all lol :)

The alternator steady bar was originally just a mock up but does seam pretty stiff, il see how it goes, I will be visiting the Rod end stand at Autosport in Jan may just get a couple of ends just to be on the safe side and some more to linkage a spare rear beam i have:thumbup:

Just a small update from tonight, i now have brakes! bled them tonight with my little bro sitting in the car barking orders! (garage floor was very cold!)

    [IMG][/IMG]

New fixings for the heater, rubber washers are made up from a small one insider a bigger one from a rubber washer kit (Silverline) from ebay, fixings from local fastner shop for the grand total of 50p including washers.

    [IMG][/IMG]

Just need to finish fighting the exhaust and it can come off the stands and moved to one side as its a bit tight to work around when its in the centre of not a very big garage.

Harness currently on the kitchen floor being cleaned up, a few wires moved around and removed.

    Thanks for the nice comments:thumbup:

The cat was helping me sort out the wiring today! all of the sleeving removed and a few repairs done, redundant wires removed, still a way to go before its finished.

    Just another small update.

Spare bit of Carbon used to blank the bonnect catch hole, been done before but does tidy it up a little.

    [IMG][/IMG]

Started fitting the door cards, a job i thought would be quick! holes on the passenger side now done and inserts fitted, need to hoover out the ton of swarf before i put the door card on now.

    [IMG][/IMG]

Will try to get some decent progress done soon. Thanks

Managed to get a couple of hours in the garage to finish off the door cards which i have almost done but i have run out of the fixings (thought 40 would be enough!). Also made some gaskets for between the inner door handle - i now have a hole in one of my tool box draw liners [:$]

    [IMG][/IMG]

    [IMG][/IMG]

Made a backing plate out of some 3mm alloy with 6mm captive bolts - through the shell into the (visable) alloy backing plate and finally the battery and its alloy holder to sandwich it all together.

    Neat, excellent work :thumbup::clap:

    A few observations:

    - Will the ignition leads suffer from the additional heat
    - Are the cable pull grommets fully sealed (fuse box below ?)
    - Shame that the front cage does not mount to the sill pp the `B` pillar

Il keep an eye on the leads although the manifold is wrapped.
There is a slight gap through the cable pull grommets but I'm going to shrink wrap the cables as they pass through to make sure they are a tight fit.
The cage is mounted to a welded plate on the sill with captive nuts at the b pillar the front leg at the A pillar is to a welded plate on the floor, would have preferred it to go on the sill but it's a safety devices cage design.
