I know this has prob been mentioned loads of times before, but in new so please . . . Forgive me [:D]

In your opinion what engine would you choose 16v or 8v and why?

The reason i ask is because im new to the golf world and im about to purchase my first mk2 golf, I'm looking for a nice light, nible golf which will give great handleing and good 1/4 mile times.

    Rex
    :p

if you want overall performance, you've gotta say the 16v is better. especially if you take it on track or strip.

if you just want a fairly sensible daily driver, and don't wanna rag it for ultimate performance, then the 8v's probably more up your street.

*personally* i would never own an 8v over a 16v - unless i simply couldn't afford to insure the 16v

Good to see this topic come up in the infancy of the new forum!

Only ever had the 16V myself, so cannot compare. It is lovely though [:D]

    did say
"Few people understand the psychology of dealing with a highway traffic cop. Normal speeders will panic and immidiately pull over to the side. This is wrong. It arouses content in the cop heart. Make the b*****d chase you, he will follow..."

I'd recommend the 8v over the 16v personally. Much more practical car.

    Cheers,

    Drew.

I would reccomend the 16v because you really have to drive it to get the best out of it, makes for a very interesting enjoyable drive, and the top end is good fot motororways

Im not really bothered about motorways, the golfs gona be driven round country lanes. I use to have a stripped out corsa but sold it because i got bored and bought a clio valver but i can't drive it as it kills my right knee *dodgy knee snydrome* so i'm going to have to sell it.

I was opting for an 8v as its a good little toy with potential and slightly cheaper insurance.

My plan is to basically make it go round corners faster than in a straight line so with the 8v being a lighter engine and sitting further back behind the axels wouldnt this make the idea well handleing Play car?

8v's are great fun and practical around town... but if you want real mean machine then you've got to for a Micra 1.1 with Nova rude boy bodykit and neons...:o ....

    I'll get my coat....

I have a Jetta Gti 8v currently being rebuilt, I am driving around in a 16v golf while the Jetta is off the road. The 16v is really revvy, it is easy to do silly speeds in it and so far it has been a good laugh. I thought long and hard about whether to swap engines in to the Jetta or not but decided against it in the end. The 8v is a great all round engine. It is quick enough for me, it is cheaper to buy bits for and I would probably crash/get caught speeding or both if I put the valver in the Jetta. I would reccommend a good test drive of both to see how you get on with them.
