Please help i've recently done the head on my 1.8 8v gti pb engine golf. Checked emmisions on the machine thats pot on, Idle @ 900 and Co2 is 1.8. But it still wont start it tries to turns over but wont fire been on 20 mins this morning.Normally only takes a couple of attempts to start it.. Drove it 50 mile yesterday and it wasn't running great only getting 25 mpg. Slow and sluggish.. All Timing seams to be ok ?[:x]

so you have to disconnect the blue temp sender to get it to started?
are you 100% certain the timing is spot on, using the FAQ?.
then it drives/goes fine? and hot starts?
does it ever start and be on three cylinders for a while or anything?
fuel pump primes and stops as you turn ignition on.?
when i had a head done (digi 8v)and re-assembled it one of the valves wasnt fully closing and the car ran on three bloody cylinders sounding like a tank, didnt clear up though, so had to take the head off again.

Everything seems spot on, All timing checked by unit 21 who know golfs inside out, Even done a compression test and thats fine, Changed knock sensor still wont start on a morning unless i take plug out. once it starts its fine.

something isnt right as I'm sure you figureed out, with the sensor unplugged it should be much more difficult if not impossible to get the car started from cold. has the AFM been swapped, and are you sure you dont have a massive air leak somewhere? check the inlet mounting bolts, they seem to work loose on 8vs

Whats the AFM mate... When the lads fitted the inlet he's replaced the Alan Bolts with normal bolts and washers, wonder if theres air gettin sucked in from here. Other thing is i drive it into work 20 minute trip, 8 miles get to work 8.00 am. Dont touch car till 5.30pm and it starts without any problem [:x]

its the big metal square thingy bolted on the back of your airbox :)
interesting about the bolts & washers, if they were too wide there might be an issue with them seating properly, best to have a look with a torch & mirror
