I thought it best to start a new thread on my long term project, i'm starting back on it on Saturday. I had a Mk2 VR6 with tatty paint so I took it for a respray and it snowballed from there. Its the first time i've ever attempted to do such a major project This is how the car was, presentable but terrible paint done with an airosol can. Then I decided on a colour change rather than a respray in black and ended up taking it down to bare metal. Because the paint would be so nice I had to get new arches Then a new engine, its a 2008 3.2 BUB with 20,000miles on it Then some new seats, I got some Mk6 GTI seats for less than the cost of a retrim The car was then put into primer and the engine bay was painted Audi Daytona Grey I had the subframe etc.. shot blasted and then painted with POR15 I started to put the car back together and swapped the brakes for some S3/TT 312mm ones over Mk3 Aniversary 16x7wheels Finally the engine went in with a modified loom so the standard ECU could be used. It did start but didn't run for longer than a few seconds. There are still unplugged wires and it has no exhaust manifold as yet. After that I took some time out from it and built a garage for it to come home to. Hopefully it will see the road again some time soon. These pics were taken a while ago but its not changed since: Spec is: Late 1992 3 door shell painted Audi Daytona Grey 2008 BUB Mk5 R32 engine, Vibratechnics front mount Mk4 R32 loom, ecu and injectors Modified wiring loom VR6 gearbox, clutch and Hotgolf flywheel Mk3 VR6 Subframe, wishbones etc... R32 wishbone bushes TT/S3 312mm brakes Cupra 23mm stubby master cylinder Mk3 Aniversary BBS 2 piece wheels, 195/45x16 Toyo T1-R Unknown coilovers Mk6 GTI seats, mono wheels Retro Scorpion DTM 2.5" exhaust I'll update again on Saturday
Lovely build Ian I can't wait to see this finished. Those front seats look ace in a MK2, wouldn't mind something similar in mine
This is going to be mad! Any guesses on the weight of the r32 engine and weight distribution on axles?
I'm sure it's no heavier than the VR6 engine, may even be lighter with the plastic inlet manifold?? My suspension 'should' be VR6 specific but I need to confirm that or get new.
From what I can remember when PVW did a feature on Big Ron (who built the infamous Mk1 VR6) old Mk2 shell that he did an R32 conversion for the new owner when the car was weighed the kerb weight was almost the same as a standard MK2 16V
