I know we're not supposed to mention "eGay", but there's some ultra tasty rebuilt 9a bottom ends on the US site at the moment and they'd suit your car down to the ground - sorry couldn't help saying!

Only if you want a compression ratio of about 8:1.

the 2 ltr block is the same as the 1800 block so the 16v mk2 head should fit as for comp ratio im not sure buta skim or shim may do i will try to find out though as i am looking to do this mod myself

You can't just skim the head to get the right compression, you need different pistons as well - just find a 2l 16v block!

Am I right in thinking that an 8V 2.0 with a 1800 16V head would work if you decked the block and machined the tops of the 8V pistons... or would you end up loosing out in engine size?

Too much work for too little gain, find a 2l 16v bottom end or a full engine as tsc said.

I try not to sound like a stuck record, but just get a 9A 2 litre 16V from a Passat GT or Corrado, bung it in on KR injection and KR cams
No skimming, and fecking around with pistons needed ;) 9A

no standard power then but kr cams are better profiled if you have them

I certainly wouldn't go out and buy KR cams if I had ABF ones, but if you already have the KR ones, there'll be a small gain
