I have recently bought a mk3 golf Gti and I am starting to pull my hair out with the running problem it has. It splutters under load, randomly, sometimes fine sometimes awful. It ticks over at about 900rpm and sounds fine but when I'm driving it seems like it has a misfire and the loss of power is drastic. Annoying as I love the way they drive when good. I have replaced the following; Spark plugs (ngk) Ignition leads (gsf) Distributor cap Rotor arm lambda sensor breather pipes air pipes all over cleaned throttle body coil also had the timing checked I have had it diagnosed by a garage and they are telling me that it is showing the sensor in the distributor is faulty, I just don't want to through any more money at it with out knowing. It's really getting to me. HELP !!!!
8v or 16v? from experience, even with the dizzy hall sensor unplugged it will run, albeit at reduced power on a 16v do you konw anyone local with another mk3 you can swap ecu relays with?
I have disconnected the MAF and it has defiantly improved but I'm sure it's still there. Would this show up on diagnostics as I have had it in the garage for full diagnosis and the only thing was hall sender.
I should think it would show up on a vag-com scan but am unsure if it would show up on a Snap On or cheaper multi make generic scanner?
Hmm, hall sender it could be then as that's the only fault. Defently seems better with MAF off though. Do you think it could be with cleaning, if so what with.
My 8V GTI was running a bit lumpy/underpowered so after cleaning the TB I carefully removed the sensor in my MAF (two little screws) and gave it a blast with carb cleaner (mind your eyes - I didn't!). Gave it a very delicate wipe with tissue to remove the crap and then refitted it. Hey presto!
Pretty sure it's the MAF now as its running a hell of allot better without it. Cleanup tomorrow and will get back in here once solved.
MAF Definately start with the MAF - carb cleaner and cotton buds FTW! BUT Remember to clean the connectors with 1000 grit and then vaseline them before reconnecting - this could be as simple as a dry joint!
Well I have cleaned out the TB and the MAF and all is well apart from a flat spot at high revs which I am guessing is my Hall sender/sensor in my distributor. When I cleaned the MAF I didn't remove it from its casing I just took the unit off and cleaned with Wynns carb cleaner, I have also bought MAF cleaner and will be taking the MAF itself out to clean that as well. I have ordered a new distributor with Hall sender/sensor and will fit that end of the week. I think I will then have a perfectly working golf :-) I will post back when all good.
Sorry, new to this what do you mean sig? I also thought that the AGG engine has no adjustment for the dizzy. I had it timed and while doing this we moved the dizzy and it made no difference. Sorry if I'm going down the wrong lines with what your saying, long time since I've played with cars.
