You should take out the arch liner on all golfs to clean out the muck that collects these, mk4 is no exception

ive broke and owned lots of mk4's and apart from any damaged bodywork that hasnt been treated or repaired properly ive never seen any excessive rust issues, and never seen any rust on the roof, maybe you have had a bad one

you're probably right about me having a bad one, it does seem to have its unfair share of issues.

Or maybe its because I live very near the coast(salt water spray and all that), and the car has always been near the coast with previous owners.

However, I have seen quite a few threads on other forums about people having rust on the roof in the same place as mine, and of course the rusty wing issue. VW are apparently well aware of the issues.

    Hi VW brethens,

Happy new year. Yes i guess many will beat up the MK 4 for being slower, fatter, plasticky etc etc.But I have had mine since 05 with 88kms on it and now it has reached 350kms already.Havent had any breakdowns at all and very pleased.Engine is still unopened.Just got myself a AUM 03 engine that I want to put in soon.

Fuel is good too 400 miles for a full tank. Power is alright and would be nice if it can go like the MK 5 but its a smaller engine and in my opinion really reliable.I have 2 MK 2's and a MK 1 all GTI's . Love the MK2 and second the MK 4.

No regrets. Working these cars in Malaysia. Happy VW....
