I think the GTI looks ok. You mk1 and mk2 lovers just like the old classic box shapes, which is fair enough. The new rounder shape cars can look similar to each other, I agree, but then so do the old classic box shape cars (mk2 golf, lancia delta, mg maestro).

I think that if it's good to drive, then it will be a good car, I wont write it off just cos of the way it looks, and VW are saying they intend to make the gti more of a drivers car than the dull mk3 and mk4.

And I dont think a mk1 is perfection, far from it actually! This is perfection:

My opinion on the Mk5 is pretty much the same as for any Golf - base models look sh1te, GTI models not too bad, but they never really look that nice until they're modded.

Hated the Mk4 when it came out, but it's grown on me a lot. Even the much maligned Mk3 is becoming more popular now so I don't think VAG will have anything to worry about unless the GTI engines are cr*p.

I think the mk1, mk2 and mk3 looked similar in shape, apart from lights and stuff. The mk4 lost that and the mk5 has just become another GTI (Toyota, Astra, Civic)

The mk4 (ignoring the complaints about being overweight and that) was the only car around that still had a bit of originality about it. It stood out a bit from the crowd. One of the things I loved about Golfs. This mk5 has lost that and the 'Golf shape!.

Really saddened when I saw this new Golf, straight away thought Puegot 307! Then after that ever other car... Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla and as mentioned above the new Astra.

    Pity.

Even in the bigger cars - Passat, Mondeo, Vectra etc all look the same.
    Whatever happened to originality?

Lets hope the GTi can claw back some respect.
