+1 for a new bonnet even if it does cost a little more. It's what you see every time you drive it.

Its mighty hard to get a damaged bonnet perfect, specially in a short time frame, heat cycling through the seasons and engine heat, metal stress and memory will bite you back.. What I do know is, I screwed my bonnet up cutting back paint that made friction and heat and there was no way I was ever going to get is as good as one that was in perfect condition. My doors however held the shape and the passenger side was a mess, I assume there was less heat involved.

I always assumed a new bonnet would be the best bet...

What's the average cost of a respray? Doesn't have to be immaculate, just good.

I have a spare early bonnet you can have if you want. It will need respraying unless you like it bright yellow on top!
Check which washer jets you have. If the hole for them is a cross, you're welcome to it.

    Cutting labour costs...

There are a lot of panel shops here on CGTI, find one that's approachable discuss what you can do to minimise labour costs and offer to...

    • Remove both Wings/Guards
    • Clean and Scuff with scotch pads
    • Prep with wax and grease remover
    • Wrap in clean bubble wrap for delivery
    • Buy New Factory Primed Bonnet
    • Scuff and Clean Bonnet
    • Find paint codes and type (if you can)
    • Do whatever they may suggest...

Painting is the quick part and the pros know how to make the metalic fleck lay to make an almost perfect colour match.. It's not hard to be mediocre...With metalic it will show though!

    Let them...

    • Seal/Prime
    • Colour Match/Check base coat
    • Use correct paint systems and apply Base Coats
    • Apply Paint System Clear

    Then you can...

    • Fit the panels
    • Let the panels completely cure
    • Cut, Buff and Polish.

    Backyard painters dont have..

    • Vented dust free booths
    • Colour matching skills
    • Gun setup skills
    • Temperatire controlled environments for painting.
    • Good Paint systems

If it takes too long to dry or applied to thin or thick, the metalic fleck wont lay correctly and it wont match well and you'll wish you painted the whole car and there's more to it than waving a paint gun around with metalic paint. I sucked bad enough at painting simple acrylic Alpine white.. I'd never attempt a metalic job.

I've just been told by Delete-a-dent that I'll need a new bonnet...
But I'll be more than happy to bring it over to you, maybe next Friday?

If I do need a new one I might take Sparrow up on his offer of a lovely yellow one.

I would paint tops and front of wings and blend the rest so you don't have to blend into the doors, then clear coat whole wings bonnet and front panel.
by the looks of things not a lot of primer will be needed for prep
take petrol cap off and get paint matched to that as that should consider fading etc

    quick question about the radiator...

I bought one off VW Heritage along with the top, bottom and that thinner pipe.
but if my memory serves me right there is a 4th hole which looks like something should be screwed in,
is it for a plug or something? I don't remember anything like than on my old radiator.
