Whilst a small part of me is relieved that I never got the hang of Photo******* I'm genuinely annoyed that they have shafted so many people's threads and created so much hassle for the admins To echo Sirguydo's plea, tell us numpties what to use - and how to use it please.
Paid members can use the forum that's you best bet for here from now on for other forums and older threads there are a few out there I'll test a few over the next few days and report back and maybe make a how to thread
I'm more than happy to make a "how to" for IMGUR. It's really simple providing you don't use mobile view!
Brief overview of image hosting Basically, image hosting is where an image is saved to a computer that is connected to the internet, so that it can be accessed easily using a URL, like a webpage. This means that all Photobucket, IMGUR, flickr, etc. do is store photos on a computer. Their main cost is paying their ISP for the bandwidth to show these photos whenever someone asks to see it. Actual space to store the photos is cheap. Options to PB Use another free service. There are many, but you risk the same thing happening again. Use a paid for service. This reduces the risk, but, as can be seen with PB, it doesn't guarantee anything. If you have the option, host the photos yourself. You will simply need a domain name and hosting package, and these are only a few quid a month. You can then also add your own personal email address, so you never have to change your email address when you move ISP. Obviously this isn't as easy as the image hosting companies, but once you know how to do it, your images will be safe for as long as you pay the monthly fees, even if you move hosting companies, ISP, house, etc.
All well and good Alex but , I don't mind spending time and effort sharing photos etc but spending money is a different thing.
For my build thread for example, I can't see what the picture i posted was in the first place so it makes it hard to replace it! I think we need to sit tight for a bit, I'm pretty sure something will happen about this. They can't get away with something as drastic as the whole forum and blogging world is against them.
I have just done a query on the forum database to see how many photobucket hosted images are on the forum. Are you sitting down? 81965
There is a way to get them. I'm in the middle of writing a guide. Still a bit of a pain but far easier than clicking on each individual image link
Then you'll just have to hope the one you choose doesn't do this to you. For me, a few quid a month to ensure I don't have to worry about this sort of thing is worth it, and pays for itself when this sort of thing happens. I've paid for domain hosting for 15 years, and so have never had to change my email address, and deal with crappy front ends, or changing where to go to get my email. I just set it up on my PC/phone when they're new, and forget about it.
Not good - 10 years of my build thread gone. Not updated it for a long time as been struggling for time recently, but I was going to get round to it eventually seeing as the car is now not that far away from being finished. The thought of having to manually go through and fix links seems like an impossible task.
I have downloaded all mine now and have been back on and their site is overloaded with people downloading lol
I still have all mine, This will have caught alot of sites/Club forums on the back foot, they should have been hosting members photos long time ago ... alot of people will not re-host I would say
Have just deleted my PB account, thankfully I hadn't uploaded / linked many photos, so not a huge hassle for me, but feel for those who have 100's in build threads etc.
Just thought my mate owns a internet line of site pipeline sales company so could sort all this for me for free ( possibly )
