i know this is a bit of a poofy subject, but bare with me.

ive got a set of rado vr6 speedlines i wanna put on my mk3. the wheels will suit the car, ive seen pics of another and it looked nice.

one of them has bubbled paint.

my aim is to get paint stripper, strip it down to the metal. get some wet and dry and some polish and shine them up.

lacquer them and bolt them on

will this work? anyone got tips?

will work fine, but bear in mind:

its loads more work than youd think, and,

laquer isnt designed to stick properly to metal so it WILL eventaully flake off/go cloudy when water gets under it.

I've enarly finished polishing the roof rails on the B3 wagon, loads smaller/simpler than a set of alloys, and its taken ages. Its ok once youve got all the initail scratches out, but as I found on the roof rails, you might find that the castings are quite rough and you have to start with quite a coarse grit like 120 to get the casting marks out, then go down through 240, 400, 800 and 1200 grit.

o and nitromors and a palm sander FTW

    nitromors is a stripper right?

is there any sort of lacquer that will stick properly? i hate cosmetic stuff, so dont fancy doing it twice lol

the beauty of these wheels is how simple they are. a nice square 5 spoke design, hopefully it wont be too bad

I wouldn't bother lacquering, just keep them bare polished metal and buff them up once a week and they should be fine.

And yes nitromoors is paint stripper, I used the stuff that comes in the green tin on a set of wheels and it took the paint off fine and didn't mark the metal.

tbh, unless you get proper 2 pack laquer (which is nasty stuff and you need an air fed mask to spray it in) then any laquer you get isnt likely to be up to much. The best 1K stuff ive found was called "smart clear" from www.paints4u.com but they dont seem to do it anymore. But clear lacquer simply isnt designed for bare metal and cant adhere properly.

if it were me if get some proper etch primer and spray them silver.

If you do want them lacquered then maybe get a professional to do it. I'm sure you can get a clear powder coat.

Or get some chrome spray paint [8D]

ive got the paint stripper, its going to start tonight lol

do you people really think chrome paint will work much better than just lacquering the alloy?

know if halfords sell it? (ive never done anything with paint before)

i dont want chrome, i just want polished and lacquered, but apparently that wont work

what if they are not polished, just bare metal, slightly rough, so that the lacquer has something to key to?

I was just kidding about the chrome paint, it's not the best stuff in the world.

Do you not wash and polish your car very often then?

I've started to clean up my BBS solitudes as well.

Nitromors paint striper is really good, get some wirebrush drill attachments to make the job easy too.
just paint them silver, etch primer and silver paint, and normal clearcoat
