I've spent bloody ages working on one of my BBS RM outer rims. Yes, I'm trying to restore them myself. I've been using an alloy wheel polishing kit I got from Frost. It contains a couple of different sized polishing wheels to wang onto the drill, a little cone shaped polishing attachment, and a stick of polish stuff.

After far too many hours of work I've got this one outer rim to the stage where it's definitely better but is still a million miles off from being anywhere near a finished result.

Anyone have any advice on what other polishing stuff I could try to use? Any particularly recommended products I could get from, say, Halfords?

Spose I should post some pics of what I've done so far.

And if you achieved the above using just wet'n'dry and metal polish, then I am seriously going wrong somewhere

I did enquire about having my original BBS RAs refurbished, but not asked anyone about prices for polishing the outer rims on these RMs. To be honest I really want to do them myself, even if it takes bags of time. It's something that I see as part of the whole challenge.

Right when you've got to that stage of polishing and done it with autosol, how long do they stay shiny before you have to polish again? is it only really a summer wheel option?

On the Rial wheels that i just got, the dishes are already polished but the laquer has been chipped slightly. if unlaquered, i dunno if i cant be bothered with all the work of having to repolish them everyweek with autosol....

The above wheels look mint :)

trev, wet and dry will get you there quicker(still and long slog! [:^(] ), that polishing kit is no good straight off you have to get to 1000 paper before using it.

i tend to give mine a quick(20 mins on the set) re polish every 2 weeks or so and wash them at least once a week....i only use mine in summer, winter use would be BAD on em

if you know anyone going on hols to usa ,get em to bring back "MOTHERS MAG POLISH" i find it better than autosol

Go through the sanding down process first like Pigbladder has mentioned (800 - 1000 - 1200 - 1500), then start polishing with Peek metal polish, its much better than Autosol. The Peek will give it a highly polished finish but the shine will still be a little dark.

After you've used peek use the cutting compound which you've recieved with your polishing kit. This will give it a much better finish, ie it will be highly polished and clear light finish.

This is what you can achive with peek:

And this is what the finish was like after the polishing compound:
