the caliper dimensions are the same mk2/3/4 (2wd), as Tristan says the difference is down to the carriers. for 4wd and maybe some higher spec the rear discs are 256mm, the calipers for those are different and wont bolt up to mk2/3 carriers

other thing to note with mk4 type ally calipers is there are 3 sizes of piston, 36, 38 and 40mm

Nope, again, Dodgemeister, same as mk2 caliper. As you said above, the carrier affects that.

And RJ, isn't it true to say, no standardish mk2 needs 256mm rears??

even the g60/rallye 4wd only had 239mm rears (front discs from a 1.3 ) so yeah you would need a monster to need bigger rears. people mostly do it for the looks tbh

Number 1 son has a thing about brakes. He wants four pot monsters with separate wildwood handbrake calipers. It is a constant battle reigning him in and managing expectations  He soon calms down when he sees the price though.......

If I was splashing out, i think I'd go the extra mile and buy AP or similar. Lots of people fit Wilwood or HiSpec, and then fit AP, Alcon etc after a while.
Nobody ever regrets AP or similar!

Are the bolts that hold the stub axle onto the beam the same as the drum ones, M10 X 32mm?

Got the AP 4 pot calipers that were standard on the higher spec TF on our mgf, they are very good, and reasonable, don't know if they are adaptable, I've heard of them on bmw minis, but never looked at vw swap. There are also 2 pot versions on later mgtf too, they were stupid cheap when rover closed and they sold stock off, (including unregistered cars )!

Ally from memory, was nearly 5 years I fitted them, sure they are alloy though as I stripped the paint before fitting.

So, calipers and hoses ordered as per above. However, they no longer come with banjo bolts. There seem to be a couple of different types. Should I get ones that match the hose or the caliper, ie Passat versus Golf? Are the calipers the same on both cars?

    These? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-Passa...2349624.m46890.l49286&mkrid=710-127635-2958-0

Think it's the same, and audi A4 too, don't forget new washers too for the banjo.
Think the banjo is m12 x1, I used vagbremtechnic or something like that for mine when built up the rear calipers.
Thise look right, actually on my caddy I used polo calipers with passat hoses and banjo so suppose standard across ranges.
Those linked are only just up the road from me @PhilRyder ! Wrong side of the hills apparently.

A nice, decent upgrade is radially mounted Brembo calipers off an Alfa Romeo fitted onto Creation Motorsport caliper brackets and 312mm brake discs off golf mk4…this is the route I am going with my mk2 after fitting the large Borg Warner s300v turbo…they would go under 16/17” alloy wheels with good offset ! Of course one needs 5 stud conversion in order to get them to fit !

Most parts gathered now. We plumped for mk4 callipers and, by Jove, they are the lightest callipers I’ve ever had the pleasure to handle
However, nothing comes with bolts or nuts :(
Are the hub nuts and thrust washers the same size as the drum ones. If so, what size are they and I’ll order some new ones?

    Next question.
Which circuit is which on the master cylinder. Would I be right in thinking that the outlet nearest to the servo is the front brakes and the outlet furthest from the servo is the rear brakes?

Or is it not that simple. Having looked at the brake pipes it seems there may be a front/back diagonal split. This would make a single brake bias valve no good, it would need to be a double bias valve?
