Hmmm, might see if I can get my hands on a small quantity and do some tests on a spare bonnet I have, just to see how it goes on and how tough it is.

    Great stuff PB.
Not sure if this has been covered but if you are colour changing a good wing for example. Do you need to prime it? Or just sand/scotch the clear?

    plastic parts

for repairs on plastic parts anywhere youve rubbed though to bare plastic will need a coat of plastic primer , comes in either transparant or coloured , then after 10 mins straight on with the normal high build

for new parts , theyre often ready primed if so grey scotch pad and paint

if its bare -grey scotch pad with panel wipe then plastic primer ( new bare parts are often very contaminated with release agents so clean it alot)

if you are unsure most plastics will have what type it is stamped on the rear like pp or epdm and so on , read up on the primer sellers blurb to make sure its suitable for what you have

paint - use normal paint , for pro shops these are flexible additives but theyre only needed on very bendy parts

if you had a perfect condition car yes you could scotch the whole car , what i would do is give it a gentle sand with 800 wet to help remove any excess orange peel , plus chances are theres blemishes that need sanding

only need to prime when it starts to look like a patchwork quilt , no issues with spot priming a small scab and keying the rest of the sound paint

personally I don't use farcela G3 etc compound think its rubbish ! I used to, I now use a much better make which is easier to use and makes less mess!
I'll post the make up later
I also generally do 2 coats of lacquer but that's using a max Myer kit I get great results with it
If I'd known I would have taken some pics today of prepping and painting

Deox gel could almost do with it's own thread. This is the best time of year to use it, but even so removing 20 years of rust can take some time. I started a bit June 1st and it's taken about 10 days with regular removal scrubbing and reapplying, wrapping. During the latest use I've noticed how important rinsing with a piped in fresh supply of water is as even apparently untainted gel watered down and mopped up with kitchen roll will turn the paper from orange juice to dark rusty orange in no time. Also it doesn't seem to appreciate being heated up. I left some gel wraps in the sun and it has dulled the steel finish as well as having a bit of an off metallic smell.

found the deox wont work in colder temps ..and dries out in warm weather lol

i make a little dam around the scab with tape then try and seal it with a bag ..rinse and repeat until its all silver metal

    Nice writeup Pigbladder,

Quick question for you - is it good to wet sand primer? I've heard that it's hydroscopic therefore it will absorb moisture. Also - why wet sanding? It's faster, better finish, doesn't clog up your paper, or a combination of all those things?
