Gary in stretched tyres shocker! :o

Next you'll be removing one perfectly good front windscreen wiper, and fitting crystal headlamps.

Tyres are one of the most important things on a car, doesnt matter if you say you only drive slowly as Jolfa says the grip is decreased especialy if you run some silly cheap 165's, at 70+mph on the motoway I fancy as much grip as possible.

It is a case of each to there own but if you did smash your car up due to lack of grip you would feel a bit regretful that it was all because you thought your tyres looked cool.

Looks alright but not the biggest fan of stretched tyre so might have to sell them

Oh, my tyres are also starting to get kinda cut up because they're rubbing on the inside of the arch.

    Is this bad?

well. yes. but I mean does it compromise the tyres? I'm having the arches rolled this week. The gouges are at most 2mm deep.

It's a bit of a risk - could cause a blow out - and could fail an MOT. It depends how bad the gouging is, compared to the thickness of the rubber at that point on the tyre.

If you start to see threads in the gouges its time for them to go in the bin, definite MOT fail then.

gouges of a couple of mm in the tread of the tyres will be fine-if its on the corner where the tread wraps onto the sidewall then you'll probably scrub it away after a few weeks anyway.

Gouges in the sidewall are not so good and damage here can be dangerous. However if i'm honest 2mm is probably fine. I've had tyres with light scuffs and gouges on an old 205, that thing got hooned everywhere and nothing went wrong.

It's the edge of the tread blocks, so the outermost row of tread blocks is about 2mm narrower when viewing the tyre head on. Side wall itself is fine. The areas that have been cut still look solid no sign of getting close to the metal threads etc.

I'm actually tempted to go lower profile now maybe 205/40/16 to gain a bit more clearance and because it's sitting a little high.

As for why bother, primary reason was more traction so I'd stop wheel spinning off the line, and surprisingly it holds the corners more confidently now than it did before. Also braking distance has decreased. And yes, call me a fashion whore, but every time I see them on my car it makes me smile.

And yes, I know I won't be smiling when they pop off on the motorway and I kill a bus full of school children on their way to Alton Towers. I guess I'll just have to drive more carefully then.

^^^ its religion. We have to have one thread per month about stretch tyres, 8v vs 16v and the weight of a mk3

    Thanks.
Best part - that 16x7" wheel weighs just 6.2kg.
Made by Fuchs, for Mercedes-Benz ;)
