Does anybody have one of these?

    Are they any good?

I'm only asking because 1650 fitted (inc. vat) for a 2litre 8v including stage 1 head and fast road cam seems quite cheap...

    Does it?
500 tops for a decent block
150 tops for a decent cam
    150-200 for P&P
    200-250 fitting

Not sure where the other 500 is going and I am assuming this is on an exchange basis

    Rip off, just buy a 2E 2.0 8v for about 300.

Thought I was going to get flamed there.
Glad to see I am not the only one who cannot abide these over priced off the shelf monkey boy outfits.

Well, cheap compared to, say, TSR, where a short engine is 1000 (not fitted), stage 1 is 350 (not fitted), TSR cam is 176, althought the TSR bottom end is lightened and balanced.

I was just wondering about quality / longevity of engines?

What's the point in paying someone to make you a 2.0 when you can already buy a 2.0 8v or 2.0 16v fromt he breakers yards?

    1650!! I could do a VR6 conversion for that.

That is a comparison of one off the shelf unit with another component based one.

My argument was you could get a better engine fitted for less money by avoiding the high priced off the shelf vendors.
You can pick up a 1.8 20vT for less than they are charging for a recon 2.0 with your head!

Well, personally I would rather not pick up a s/h block, the history of which I didn't know, only to have to get it rebuilt either before installation or after 2 years of using it. I am not interested in a serious engine swap - I don't want to be f-cking about with electrics, manifolds and sh-t to fit a 2e or an ABF. I would rather have the same size (short) block + head, rebuilt by someone who knows what they are doing (i.e. not me) that I know will be good for 100,000+ miles, but that will provide a little more power than standard.

Although I'll tell you what - if you want to, you can fit a nice VR6 to my Mk2 and I will happily pay you 1650 (I assume that figure is all-in, parts and VAT included?).

    I'm not VAT registered.

If you're serious go find a VR6 setup and give me a shout.

But doesn't the 1650 include the engine?

It depends how cheap you can find a VR6 setup.

Bearing in mind I just sold a whole mk2 VR6 for less than that...

    But as I said, I don't want a s/h engine, I want a rebuilt one.
How much does a VR6 rebuild cost?

call around some of the tuning companies - ask them how much they would charge to fit a rebuilt 2 litre 16v or 2 litre 8v engine

give DesignaDubs a call - i imagine you will be surprised at the performance you can get for the money you are looking at for a std engine

It's not a standard engine, it is a 1781 overbored to 83mm with ks pistons, stroker (I think), plus complete rebuild, with stage 1 head and fast-road cam, with fitting included.

All I wanted to know was whether or not anyone on the forum had experience of recon engines from Volkspares.

I havent personaly, but a friend of mine had one in his car and was chuffed with the results (1.8 on carbs iirc) He thrashed it on track, up the strip and on the roads for ages then sold it before we could see what part let go first.

Give them a call or go and see them, I once asked them a question and got sent to the machine shop to talk to the guy doing the work.
