Reflector design plays a part, but there are a few other factors:

Quality of the LED - some LEDs are brighter than others. Good makes of LED are CREE, SSC, and Luxeon.

Batteries - Li-ion, Lithium and NIMH batteries will all push out more current than a standard Alkaline AA.

Circuit design - some torches just use the batteries in the normal way, getting dimmer as time goes by and voltage drops. Others use voltage regulators to ensure a constant voltage gets to the LED, putting out full power light until the battery dies.

For a decent cheap torch, the 3W CREE Tesco torches take some beating at a tenner. Brighter than a 3D Maglite, and a lot smaller and lighter.

    Why not?[:s]

I expect that people on torch forums are surprised that there are GTI forums:lol:

Get a f***ing great Maglight, I've had mine for about 15 years & it's still going strong in spite having been used as a hammer on a few occasions:thumbup:

I used to own a re-chargable version of the 4D Maglite.

    Best torch ever!

Bought it in Alaska, and AFAIK you can`t get them here. Absolutely gutted that I lost it... [:^(]

I had it nicked twice previously, but got it back

How exactly someone can think they can steal, and then use, something on a ship without the owner finding out is beyond me...

Got lucky the third time though... [:x]

    They weren`t cheap either. $300 a pop!
