Hi, i am looking to buy a vr6 any time now, as im fed up with my 1.4! I am hoping to do eithr a supercharger conversion to it, or a turbo conversion! Which on is best, and what sort of prices am i looking at? Are there any other mods you can do to a vr to dramatically improve power? I just want some idea of power gains etc, and prices?

    cheers for your help everyone!

Going from a 1.4 (60bhp) to a VR6 Turbo/Supercharged will be a big shock, be carefull not to kill yourself!

You're looking at 3.5-4k to turbo a vr6, roughly. And a hell of a lot of insurance. And power [:D]

I'm not being funny, but if you don't know the pro's and con's of both, why are you even thinking about touching the VR? I think you'll find it's got plenty of power for an ex- 1.4 driver.
If it is a conversion you are planning, then when it is eventually time to get a VR, I'd scrap your car that you have now, and buy a proper VR.....you'll save yourself a lot of heartache. :)

yeah, but the car i have now is a feature car, and worth like 4k and i aint just gonna scrap it am i! I have driven plenty of vr6's before, and aslo driven a scooby and an MR2 Turbo, so a vr will not be that much of a shock at all! I was merely asking as i am gettin a vr, and was just wondering what sort of mods i can do in the future! Check febs edition of The Golf + mag if you think my car is scrap!

I don't understand your point? are you saying you want a VR conversion? or a new car?

Aren't you a student? have you done a quote? VR's aren't exatly affordable, I couldn't insure one for sure, I'm young but not a student and earn a decent weddge.

    4k for a 1.4 mk3 golf

I agree with phil, a standard vr6 will be more than enough. Buy one, drive it, realise what it costs to run the first time something breaks / you service it / fill it with petrol / insure it, THEN if you're brave enough, think about a turbo ;)

If you want to do it, can afford to do it, then do it.

As to the power issue. A friend of mine had a supercharged VR which gave 301 on the rollers. Thousands later he's close to having changed to a turbo setup and should be 350 ish. lot of money for an extra 49 bhp but there we go. Should be lovely when it's finished though. [:D]

I have to agree with this, planning to convert a 1.4 to a VR would mean changing practically every component and who would want to buy a butchered 1.4/Vr6 hybrid when they can go out and buy a ready made VW version?

I would say it is easier to buy a Vr6 and pull off the bodykit kit and the... umm thats it (the wheels wont fit) and then just bolt them on the VR6, then flog your 1.4. Job done!
