Hi folks, just wondering what people have done to quieten their carb/TB noise with the use of airboxes on their 16v's?

I have looked into the Pipercross range although i remember RobT's issues with having to play around with it alot before getting it somewhere towards what he wanted.. this is not problem for me if the results are worth the hassle..

One other thing i was curious about is that looking at the engine bay the space between the carbs and the alternator looks like it wont accept a box? or is this deceiving?

Engine is 9a on twin 45's in a mk2 Scirocco - theres plenty of room infront of the carbs and enough above..

    Pictures and advice welcome!

I'm not using an airbox or filters on my own.
I was running piperX filters but with such a alrge gap above my rad I was getting too much air (ram air effect) directly into the carbs and it would lean out and bog down at anywhere over 50 with light throttle.
I'm now using a deflector postioned 2 inches infront of my 60mm trumpets. It'll allow air enough air to flow around the deflector to not hinder performance, but not let it flow in directly and bugger things up.
You may argue that i'll be drawing in debris, although I haven't come across any problems so far.

Noise would be a problem on track days though. The carbs make one hell of a racket at full chat! and tends to draw too much of the wrong attention on the road.
But what the hell, it really does sound the bolx!

back in the day when i had twin 40's i ran sock filters but like martin i had air flow problems so i place a panel in front of the left carb (as u look on the like) and it fixed that problem.
i only did Llandow track day with this set up, they arent worries about noise levels

no filters=lots of engine wear, especially on track, rubber from tyres mixed with fine grit makes some lovely grinding paste.

have a search for mad20vs posts on airboxes, but try not to make one with square sides or it'll be a bass box for the carbs and amplify the noise.

this looks canny with a big filter on the end

vizard writes loads about this, tights feck the airflow and don't filter, well they'll filter big lumps out but not that "fine stuff that soaks you right through" er fine grit.

I've been running filters, their s hit! Their just sap the power right down.
I've been looking into some carbon airboxes, which will fit nicely behind the rad no problem, and will accept a nice big cone filter that will fit down by the chassis leg of the mk1

I'm running a corsa/nova rad. it's about3 inches narrower and fits under the slam panel so itcan be positioned further forward towards the grill giving more room in front of the carbs.

Im running a 1.8t rad in mine, fits really well under the front panel.. the issue is not so much the tuning aspect, as these things can be put right with rolling road time, i just need to quieten the buggers down or i'll never be able to bloddy track the thing!

Is there no off the shelf boxes or anything like that? seems a bit odd for there not to be??
