    Hi all,

    still having problems im afraid,

    going the car cranking at 170 rpm with repeated charges every time i try and start it,

    i can get spark to register on my timing light by disconnecting the whol dizzy assembly and rotating the shaft that gets turned by the cam....

    but when i try and turn the engine over with the starter its a no go....

    I still get a spark, but its that weak that the timing light wont register it. tried diff coil packs, diff dizzy caps, i am losing my rag with it now.

    I want to set the ******** crank ignition timing but cant if the bloody timing light isnt registering the flaming spark!!!

    Is this a ****ed starter motor?

    Help, Scott

    cheers brookster, if i charge it right up i get one good start (attempt) with it....

    on top of that, just checked the compression.... bad times.

    Took a risk on an unknown bottom end. resutls as follows.....

    1 = 12
    2 = 8.2
    3 = 8.2
    4 = 7.8

    Put some oil in the bores, got

    1 = 15.2
    2 = 15.6
    3 = 15.5
    4 = 16

    So looks like i will be whipping the pi$$ing thing out

    Great.

    yea i thought that but its not, no where near.....

    Im stumpted, i tried to fire it up with the oil in the bores and nothing, managed to check the timing and its now spot on 10 BTDC, maybe it is just the starter,

    what compression should i bee looking at,

    its an abf top and bottom with 2 stacked abf headgaskets....

    Im getting fuel, getting spark with a full battery, the spark was registering well on the timing light with a full battery , probs lasted 20 secs, then dies away....

    So i really dont know....

    Req fuel == 7.6

    Cranking PW -40 degF = 6.668
    cranking PW 170degF = 0.874

    i am simultaneously injecting.....

    I am lost now, pretty down in the dumps haha.....

    If the engine has not been running for a while and you have been cranking it over trying to start it with fuel being injected the compression figures may be a little low. The thing will certainly still fire up with that compression. Check it after it has had a run and cleaned all the gunk and crud out of the cylinders and off the valve seats. The duff starter will no doubt be turning it slower than it should too which will not help the compression figures.

    Are the spark plugs all new or have they been used or got soaking wet attempting to start it?

    Starter motor should be spinning the engine at 300rpm to fire it up.

    i was scratching my head for ages wondering why it wouldn't fire and it was the starter motor all along.

    ok, cool i'll sort it out.

    But what do you think to the compression readings....

    Shall i get a new starter then look at it again?

    all sparks new, leads new, dizzy cap new, rotor new,

    they did get soaking wet, but i cleared the flood every time, been trying for 3 days now.

    Im coming to the conclusion to now even try and start it again without 300rpm (ish) cranking like brookster said. Its just disheartening thats all. But tomorrow is a new day, and infortunately its a bloody bank holiday, so no starter tomorrow........

    so 14 in req fuel,

    then 88% of 14 in -40degF @ Cranking....

    then 23% of 14/2 in 170degF ????
