    Hi Guys

I am looking to try TSC's engine steam cleaning trick on my GTi but i cannot find the thread with it in. Does anyone have any idea where it is or got the link to the thread?

    Cheers

since its a GTI you need to pop off a vacuum hose to the throttle body, and dip this in a pint of water. hold revs up and it should suck it all up eventually!

OK sounds simple enough. Does it matter which vac hose i do it through on the throttle body? Does it make any difference to the running of the engine? Thought it may be a good idea to do at as its been running badly as you know from last thread .

Will much water get down into the oil?

I used the one that connects to the airbox :)
water shouldnt get into the oil it should get vapourised, if any does get past a good long run will burn it off.

    should clean it out nicley

just dont let it sup the pint real fast...make it take sips instead

some of the water will get in the oil , so best do it before a oil change

Sorry if this sounds a bit stupid but is the amount it sucks up controlled by me giving it a rev every now and again or is it just what it sucks up itself?

    Cheers Chaps

Id hold the rpm at 2k or sommet, the rpm will dip when you do it so if its ticking over it will probably stall.

harder you rev, harder it sucks
it may stall if you fdont hold revs up, so if it starts to bog give it more revs

Think its cleans up any carbon build up in the bores and on the valves.

Correct me if im wrong, but water cant be compressed, therefore if the engine takes in too much water without it evaporating or turning to mist, it will throw bits of conrod and piston etc all over the place.

The steam cleaning theory works fine, and many people do it, but to be honest, id use a mister sprayer, like the one you use to water plants or clean windows etc, and put a tiny bit of acohol in with it.

The reason for this, is that the tiny droplets are very small and the engine can handle this amount of water because it turns to steam well before tdc.

And the alcohol just helps with the burn and to help burn up and spit out all the crap.

you need to put a lot of water in an engine to hydro lock it, if you keep the revs up and only put in a slow tricle of water theres no danger of it happening.

well not corrected really, everything you said is correct  If you dumped a jug right down the inlet it wont like it, tho with a GTI its very hard to do that. Carby has more risk of this so just keep revs up and only pour it in slowly :)

Good tip about the alcohol too, can only help. Maybe get a bottle of cheap nasty supermarket vodka, prob best use for it

Think about a 1.8 litre engine revving at about 3000 rpm, and the amount of water it would take to hydrolock it... loads! I don't even take the vacuum pipe out of the water, just keep the revs up with the throttle until it's drunk it all.

    This sounds well dodgy.

Does it actualy work? Has it been proven? Anyone opened up their engine to find out?

This the same as Sea Foam that alot of yanks use?

Why water and not something like gunk?

    Tell a newby:)

It's been used since about the 1940s... ever seen the inside of an engine that's blown a head gasket and been drinking water? Clean as a whistle...
