Erm, by picking up dirt and grit from dirty water in the bucket and dragging it around the bodywork. Yes indeed you use a side to side motion if you know what you are doing, but how many people have you seen who wash their car with a spongein a circular motion? Loads!
All I'm saying is sponges are no good when compared to a lambswool/ microfibre wash mit, most people still use sponges as they are cheap and readily available, but cheap is not necessarily best.
With regards the cleaning of the paint to remove tar/sap etc, apart from the real enthusiasts who know how to use a clay bar, who really does all of the things you mention before they commence washing with a sponge?
I think most people would be happy enough just using a sponge and bucket to clean their car, as it is less hassle, and quicker.
You carry on using your sponges, after all you do the job for a living so you must know what you are talking about!
And when we are talking about time and money a quick going over with a sponge wins everytime.

I use virtually the whole SONUS range for cleaning/polishing including wash mitt, shampoo, dryingtowels, detailing towels and their SFX range of polish.Meqs NXT wax at the moment but I am soon going to try Klasse All In One and sealer for the final finish.

Get yourself to a car show and find the meguirs stand.

They put out freebie sachets of gold class and NXT polish.

By making repeat visits you can wind up with 15 sachets of gold class, and 5 of NXT. Apparently one sachet is enough to do the whole car, so that little lot should keep me going until next year.

Right, thanks for the comments so far, given me a much better idea of what i'm after.....

I have came up with what i *think* is a decent kit....comments appreciated

Wash with sheepskin mitt and dry with a waffle weave towel
    Meguiars Quick Clay kit
Sonus 2 stage hand polish kit (and a polishing towel)
Meguiars NXT Generation Tech Wax/Sealant (then a buffing towel)
Forever black bumper & trim dye kit

This OK? My other choice of wax is Meguiar's Gold Class Clear Coat Car Wax - but apparantly the NXT is more durable as its a wax & sealant? What will give a shinier result?

With that...how often would I need to do the whole 9 yards?

Was thinking weekly wash would just be decent shampoo/sheepskin mitt/ww towel
    Then monthly do the wax
    every few months re-polish?

What can you use more regularly that wont take up 6 hours and just 'top up' the gloss/shine?

    Ta!
