My old man's got a 2001 Passat 2.5 V6 TDI (which has 90% the same DNA as an A4) and it's a cracking engine once you get used to it. Not sure about excellent mpg how ever you drive it though, it's not hard to get it down to VR6 type MPG, especially if you factor in slightly high fuel costs, brilliant economy normally though. And I don't mean if you rag it it'll get down to VR6 cruising MPG ether I mean, I've seen 11.4mpg on the trip computer after some leadfootedness from a standing start at the Severn bridge tolls, straight up to serious triple figure speeds.
