IIRC you are SUPPOSED to pay the duty equivalent to gallon of diesel to the govt.

    Yeah right!

just look in your owners manual, it will tell you if you can use rapeseed oil or biofuel which is same as chip shop left overs, im running the wifes on it now, but you need to use a tank of diesel to 2 of oil. usuall i throw the 2 together, that way you know its mixed well. i ran my old gt tdi on it with no problems and converted my mate to it too he hasnt looked back since. who cares if your back end smells like a take away your up front behind the wheel!!!

You can now make up to 2500 litres of biodiesel per person per year without having any tax added, still have to pay the duty if you buy commercially produced stuff though. My Dad runs his Audi TDI on veg/diesel and mixes it about 50-50 with normal derv, hasn't shown any problems yet, economy and power are slightly down but hardly noticable.

PDs are a no no, ive looked into and its not worth the risk, the older and more basic the engine the better but ive also read from a few places that the bio fuel eats rubber hose and seals and also you get less bang for you book.
