ive got 275hp and 235lbs of turque in a mk1 weighing in at around 675/700kg. Running a 2y box at the moment and the ratios are a bit too low for sprinting on the quarter and 60 can only be got in 3rd gear which is not ideal. Having such a low ratio box also dont help when driving as it rev's like mad and its at 100 in 9.5sec. which isnt a bad thing but im shifting into 5th for that when id rather be in 3rd or just into 4th......... So question time, Would a CDA/DPA (mk3 16v) or sumit simular be any good or would that still be too low geared? Anyone able to help me out with ratios and how to work them out
Get yourself a copy of the quaife calculator, I don't have the cda/dpa ratios to hand but if you look here it should give you an idea of what i'm on about.
Yes can get it off the quaife site, last time I looked you had to register or something so if you can't get it for whatever reason I can email the program to you if you like.

i did a few calculation about this recently. here using this gives you an idea of what speed/rpm you will be doing.
no one yet but the amount im about to cut out of it it will weigh less than that, scouts honour along the same sort of lines as jelly but with alot more taken out including alloy rear boot floor. its only going to be used on the quarter mile so im not too fussed about it as long as the cage saves me
There are loads of VAG gearboxes (both 020 and 02A/J to bolt on the back of your motor. To know which one to choose you will have to know how your engine makes torque also most VAG gearboxes unless its a diesel will not reach 60 with a 6500rev limit. You may want to consider doing stuff to support an extended rev limit if you have not done so already. A MK1, light it may be at 800ish kg is a bit of a brick through the air at 0.43 coff of drag. If you engine is very torquey from low revs but starts to drop off from 4000r/min you will need a wide ratio gear box to drop the revs near the torque max. If you have a motor like a 16v your torque is peaked higher and stays so for a short rpm range so you will want a closer ratio gearbox. IF you have a boost regulated engine, engine torque could develop from low down then clamp till the turbo runs out of puff as the engine revs build as seen in a 1.8T with a K03 you will want a wide spaced gearbox. With a supercharger you may build a lot of torque from low down but keep on building torque if the charger can spin till the red line. Cams and headwork can also enhance the VE of the engine so you can with these bits end up having an engine that displays the characteristics as a valver. On your top gear you may want something that allows the car to still have enough axle torque to cut through the air or you may want something to keep revs low at cruise it your pick.
