my old track toy, a 20vt mk2 insured for 5500, and runnig 280bhp was covered by flux, for 507 a year, not too bad for a 26 year old with 4 years no claims on this policy, and 3k miles a year.. I then sold my mk2 and got another.. this time a factory stock 16v with a few factory fit optional extras.. leather, leccy windows, leccy mirrors, worth about 2000 - 2500...I have 8 months left on my policy and pay up front for the year... so you would assume that it would be cheaper to cover the lower value waaayyyy slower and less likely to put me in a ditch car.... er NO! I got stung for a extra 170!!! the policy now costing 600 a year! (the girl excuse being that a lower value car is more likely be involved in a claim!!!! and that the new car is not modified... (we will come back to this)

so I called a few other places, and greenlight quoted me 369! far more reasonable... so off I trot to speak to flux, asking how much I would get back for a rebate thinking I would be good for about 350 once I pay a admin fee etc.... er no..... 160!!!! as there is a 75% fee by the under writer as I am canceling before 5 months has passed!!!!! then flux sick on their fees!

so the girl looks to see if I can be put on another broker etc...no joy... so when asked how they came to the conclusion that a lower value, slower car is a higher risk, I got told a number of vague stories.... then she said that just because my other car was more powerful and worth more different vehicles carry differnt rates.... which was shot out the water by my last car being... a mk2 golf of 1990 vintage!!!

so round and round went, I asked if it would make and odds if I modded the vehicle, as then I could go on a modded scheme like before.... only to be told I am on a modded scheme!!! (bearing in mined the girl when I swaped the car over last Sat told me it was more due to the car being stock!!)

the girl I spoke to in customer services "refered" it to her supervisor....then after 2 mins came back and carried on telling me why it wasnt cheaper and how some cars carry different rates...when asked when the supervisor said she then started to repeat her self... and got very shirty when I asked to speak to the supervisor! "supervisors wont speak to the public they are only for the staff..." so then I pointed out I had spoken to them before when we do the merry dance come renewal time... and they magically drop the price etc... only to be told no i hadn't it would have been a manager. so then I asked to speak to a manager... on hold i go....10 seconds later, "then manager cant speak to you now but will call you tomorrow."

I am not holding out much hope!!

needless to say I wont be renewing with flux for either of my cars (my daily is with them too!) and the wife wont be bothering either!

I am in 2 minds if to mod the mk2 or not! as it seems if i do mod it more then the nice OE wheels, and exhaust I want to fit that I may get cheaper insurance! however it would be a shame as the cars soo OE its unreal!

    rant over...

Have only ever spoken / enquired to Flux once ... and that was for a standard car (non VAG) - absolute nonsense, laughable in fact !

They certainly don`t live up to their ads / reputation.

    Good luck.

They were fine the first time around. When I recommissioned the Golf they got very short with me insisting the price they were offering me was in fact the same as the price I had been offered at renewal, when in fact it was not and I was looking directly at my previous renewal quote.

Sad to say they are about the only people who will insure me, and generally I am quite happy with their phone manner. Their roadside assistance has also very good to me.

Try Footman James, Karl. They are better for older drivers (like me) but generally pretty good on standard-ish classic cars. Or try Hagerty as well.

Sounds like you're on a regular policy not a classic one, which is why you're getting a bad deal. Bin it, claim a refund, and re-insure elsewhere. You might find just the request to cancel gets you a discount anyway.

I had an issue with Flux recently that went along the same lines.

I took my 16v off the road for a bit to do an overhall of the drivetrain, CV's, bearings, head gasket etc.

Firstly I tried to get insured on my mum's fiancee's mk4 2.8 4motion which is going spare, just as a temp vehicle. They wouldn't do it. Wouldn't insure my dad's Insignia on a temp basis either as it was worth too much in relation to mine. So I decided I could live withoput for a bit.

Now my car has taken more time than I expected due to unforseen circumstances and after 3 weeks without my own transport I decided I needed something else. I picked up a local and tidy mk2 8v. Ok, time to call Flux...

I paid just over 500 for the year... They then said they wanted an extra 250 on top of that due to an increase in the market. Well seeing as mine was 500 then, what would an 8v have been? Even calling it the same amount, you are looking at a 50% increase in premium since May!

Doing a fresh quick quote through Admiral (who I would have gone with if not for Flux) I got 600. Called them back and they said the best they could do is 670, 182 more than my premium on a car which is worth less, slower and not modded!

I agreed that I would pay this rediculous amount on the basis that when I return my 16v to the main vehicle, they would return my premium to the original amount, less their admin fees of 25 a time (so 50). Seeing as I had a feeling they would go back on their word I had them e-mail me a confirmation that this is the case... First e-mail was blank. So I called and got them to send another so at least I have something more than their word (which could quite easily have not been noted on my file).

I guess time will tell. One thing is for sure... They've lost my custom come renewal.

The thing to bear in mind about insurance is that they base quotes on risk and claims history. A few years ago a mate at work had a Pug 309 GTI which he had no problem insuring with Direct Line. He told me that they were the cheapest for him. I tried to insure my Golf GTI and they would not do it. When I changed the Golf to a Corrado 16V Direct Line were the cheapest. I guess in there view the Corrado was less of a risk than a Golf GTI.
If its modified, classic, or your not the best risk i.e. have points the best route would be to use a specialised broker. In the past I have contacted a number of specialised brokers in order to get the best deal. Then in 11 months time you need to contact the brokers again in order to get the best deal again. I now it might seem like a lot of hasle but it could be worth it.
If it is a standard car out of the showroom and you are a good risk i.e. no points, middle aged then the the compare type insurance websites might be the best. Again you need to try a couple to ensure you look at the whole market and do it every year.

I just had a nightmare with Flux too. Insured a T4 for 600, managed to get Greenlight to insure it for 350 instead. Flux quoted me far less via their automated quote system btw, but when i called them, as my van is not a full on camper (it doesnt have plumbed gas/sink) then it costs more? Errr.....that makes it lower risk.

Anyway, at the time i just needed the cover. So Greenlight approached me via the T4 forum. They were confident they would be able to beat my quote. They did astounding in fact. No NCB used, its basically like insuring a Mk2 with a classic policy. You dont need any NCB.

Called to cancel with Flux, they wanted to retain 70 from the total of the policy. An absolute joke tbh. As far as im concerned, time on risk should be based on the duration of the length of the policy. And i called them well within 7 days (of their 14 day cancellaton policy) to cancel and get my refund. Nevermind, im still saving 200 nearly overall i thought.

Flux had duplication of policies for my van. First they got the registration wrong. No phonetic check carried out on the phone. Then they set up the wrong start date. I effectively drove the van back home uninsured due to this mess up. Called to correct the reg, and they setup everything in duplicate. It took 4-5 phone calls to get the policy cancelled off due to their incompetence. Then they were meant to have refunded me. I called them back the day after, and it hadnt been processed. They assured me this was now done, and i should have my funds back (532 of it) in my account in 3-5 days. 5 days pass, nothing.

Called them back, refund had not been processed. Was fuming by this point. Made some rubbish excuses and assured me it would be back in my account within 3-5 days. They told me this last time, so i just wouldnt let it go. In the end i managed to get them to do a BACS transfer, even though they refused this was even possible earlier in the conversation.

Ive been insured with Flux before, but i dont think i will again for anything.

Thanks for telling us about Adrian flux. I am with them at the moment for my MK2 abf 16V, however I have herd they are quite dear compared to other insurance companys. I previously was with Greenlight and they gave me problems towards the end of my policy. I was with them for nearly ten years, so sounds as if they are all the same, money eating b*rst*rds!!!

Can anyone recommend a good insurnace company? I am paying 500 at the mo for my MK2 abf and only use it for car shows and fun weekends. I have only done about 500 miles since last year.

Different insurance companies work better or worse for different people, according to age, driving record, address, and the car you're trying to insure. They're all in business to make a profit - that's for sure.

I always found HIC OK to deal with a few years ago, but now they're part of Flux so that may have changed. I moved from them because I saved 50% on my insurance costs by going to a classic multi car policy with Footman James, while adding more cars at the same time.

Classic policies will be the cheapest way to insure a car if you can get one, but some classic companies won't insure modified stuff. I've got some heavily modded cars on my policy, and some of them are pretty high insurance groups, but I'm in my early(ish) 40s, not had a claim since 1995, and have a clean licence. I nearly bought a car a couple of months ago that FJ woudn't cover (a rally prepped Alfasud), and I found that Hagerty were pretty reasonable.

new to this forum do hi all
just been reading this about adrian flux and i had nothing but problems
i went to insure my 1.8T cabby other week and they would insure me if i was to insure another car with them?and then it would be 900 1000 excess plus the other car 1969 fast back oooo then i couldn't it was classic so i would then have to find another car to insure(joke)
i explained to them that i had my t5 policy with them agreed value 20k 350 excess and they was no problem with this but my 1.8t no go iam only 25 so i new this was going to be hard and dear fast back 80 no agreed mk1 polo 158 no agreed they are so random

well i get to the point now friend of mine tried to insure a t5 camper adrian flux around 700 he's 32 look at mine iam 25 well 24 at the time couple of streets up his on a drive mine on road JOKE!!! so he found this company called 2GETHER they didi his at 200 i beleve they did mine at 720 this is declared everything all engine mods etc excess 200 i was like ear to ear grin thats no extra car are anything have a look ring them up no on hold for 1hr to premium nut and they just get to the point and glad for the custom and when you do read about them they do have a good history and don't beat around the bush if anything was to happen to the price possession

hope this company helps all here
