Is it possible to put Windows XP on a Win 98 LAPTOP.

My dads got a laptop that came with 98 on it. Its quite old now. Before xp came out.
He phoned dell when XP did come out and they said no.
But why!? There all built the same?! Why cant he put XP on it? Of are they telling us a load of crap?

    Ta very much
    Mat

Edit- Oh its a dell inspiration 7000. P2 i think..... I dunno if that helps...

It's crap. you can put XP onto most PC's

The problem you might have is that it'll run VERY slowly and you may have problems finding drivers.

They probably only support that model when it's running 98.

The 98 and XP drivers are diferent so they may not be on the driver disk you got with the laptop.

Find all the drivers for XP first before attempting an upgrade. Otherwise you may find your stuck with no modema and a screen at 640*480 [:s]

If you run the XP to start with it gives you compatibility issues that may need attention.

You may not have enough memory, XP uses way more than 98 ever did. You need at least 128Mb to even consider using XP, any less and you're going to be using virtual memory far too much, basically it'll be dog slow and will shorten the life of the hard disk.

If it's only a P2, I wouldn't bother - will probably be very slow. It probably doesn't have much RAM either, and XP eats RAM! What's wrong with 98 anyway?!

It might cope with Win 2000 if it's got a decent amount of RAM, but you'll still have the issues with drivers.

It would run 2000 but I'd just reinstall 98 if I were you.

run xp pro on a 950 spitfire, O/B graphics, 128mb ram, does use up virtually memory when using photoshop etc, and can be slow sometimes, but is generally fine.

didn't even do a clean install, just whacked the xp disc in and put it straight over the top of 98 [:s] [:$]

still, had no driver issues and other people who used the disc it went balls up, been fine for almost a year now, although an upgrade looms......... ;)
