I dont mind refurbishing as it just takes time. But when I was looking at about £35 for pistons seals etc for 2 and only £70 for new I thought sod it. But we should recycle more.
£45 bargain Well I used 1 washer, between the hose and the caliper, unsure why really. Maybe just thought it could stop the two parts rusting together!! Or I felt that as I was sent them then I should use them. I received the axle brake lines as I didn't have any to copy. Took a measurement of the front to back brake lines so the local autofactors made them up. I have just finished bending them so will hopefully get a chance to fit them. Hmmm, do I just do the fronts before refilling whilst I am at it..... Like others, it's nice to get this far
The hose should seal with the male snout of it bottomed out in the hole. No need for washers. As Rubjonny said, the washers are for banjo bolts.
Totally agree I have a axle brake clip question should it have 2 or 3 on each side. I'm feeling 2 but happy to be wrong. I would like it to be correct
Thanks for that. I'm glad as I only had 4... I have also just finished painting 2 more of the p-slots. 3 down, 2 to go.. My masking wasnt as good this time so I had to clean off the leakage. Just need lacquering when this storm passes. Not mint close up but for a 36yr old wheel they are fine. Centre caps also done. The wheels left to get blasted can wait as I need tyres on 2 of the these to help move the car around
I don't suppose you have a picture for where the metal handbrake cable clip fits on the axle. Item 17 in the picture. Must switch my brain off, or put the car somewhere warm so I can think whilst looking at the issues
There's 2 types iirc, early axle has metal straps that bend around the cable outer, later type has what looks like the head of a nail welded to the axle and the stainless steel strap hooks onto that.
I have bought the metal strap type so I suppose I need to see what is underneath. Mine is an early GTi so would have assumed the handbrake cable was on top originally but have gone to mk3 calipers. Hopefully these will fit underneath somewhere
Apologies Tristan as I misunderstood. The metal straps you mention are on the early axle as part of it. This I have. Seems I purchased something else I don't bloody need Anyway, I bit the bullet and decided to change the brake pressure regulator whilst I was doing this. I was trying to keep the costs down.....TRW item Hopefully I will be moving down to the front of the car soon
As I have got to the front of the car renewing the brake lines, I took the opportunity to remove the brake fluid reservoir. It was in the way, so whilst off the car I gave it a clean. Comes up good for a 36yr old part and some effort. Atleast I will be able to see the fluid level now
Gearbox code question.... ACD10016. 4 So I understand it as an ACD version, built 10/01/1986 Is that correct? And what does the number 4 stamped below it mean?
Thought I would get the new front brake lines fitted today. Ruined the thread on one at the master cylinder yet the old one fits perfectly. Annoyed to hell as to why as others screw in okay!!! Finally realised, this and another one has the incorrect size fitting on, not the M10x1 that should be fitted. So can't get it sorted this weekend and will struggle to get it back to the auto factors this week. Aghhhhh
Question. I've got a replacement master cylinder, but what purpose is the little slider pin and does it fit below the reservoir where the hole is? It won't be fitted until I've had the engine out though
holds reservoir on, Tab on plastic to pass it through. Got focus one on mine, can't remember original I had. Mine now had a plastic securing strap just in case (cable tie)
Well, the pin is there but no tabs on the reservoir so essentially it just held in place by the seals.
