ABY engine has the trigger wheel on the cam pulley and uses coils on top of the plugs 3B & RR use a distributer system out the side/back of the head driven by the cam some good images here
I've heard of the problem on 20v engines, I was under the impression the 7a got the brass gear as alot of people seem to use them on the 20vt's to get round that problem..?
7As destroyed the original plastic distributor gear. Audi would not supply a separate new gear, you had to buy a complete new distributor. Mine came from Audi with a steel gear not a brass gear! Aftermarket steel gears appear to be available on e-bay! All that's left of the plastic gear, the inner knurled sleeve!
Be careful with con rods from S2s. Early ones were not as good as later ones! You need 027 198 401C. Used on 7As and RS2s.
This is what we would have got, if the marketing people had not killed it. They killed the performance S2s, shortly afterwards, in 1993! Just so they could sell a big booted car with a V6 truck engine!
Interesting read. 16V FTW!!! The block for that 20V n/a isn't near a 16v 4cyl - internal water pump by the looks and a breather no where near the usual location.
Seems they're talking about 3 engines... a 650bhp turbo petrol 5 valver, a V8, and a 120bhp diesel that does 125mph. Damn, my Passat would probably do 115 if I ran it hard enough down the Foxhole! So we're taking about the petrol here? There's a V8 in the mix, but that's just a couple of 16v heads and some pig iron for it to sit on, as we know. Edit, don't tell me, it was aluminium?
Tut tut. Do the maths Chris, 20v engines come in 4 and 5 cylinder variants meaning 4 or 5 valves per cylinder. Maybe worth throwing a table together to avoid confusion. Or Daved can dig out his sliderule again. Either way, the valves are badly positioned and too many. Some of the Audi's engines use the old golf small block block breather too.
Sorry Danny. All early water cooled engines are Audi. They came to VW when they bought Audi from Merc.
What you need is a daved, REDesign, knocker in'er of said breather/filter. May post if you ask nicely enough. Piece of pi55 to install one with the correct, engineer designed, tool!
Ah, said small block is long gone as of 10 years ago, though I do have a piston. The old girl did 200k and was still going, but a 16v beckoned I believe the engineering solution was a piece of exhaust to suit the diameter, a cut out, and 4lb hammer
