oh..and are you sure its the right dist(not kjet?dunno if they interchange?) sure its timed up right?...you could twist around each way while its running and see if it sounds sweeter?

dont mean to insult you ,but are you familiar with vw timing marks?..i had some agro once cus i timed it on the "0" instead of the "v" or vise versa

It sounds tractory -loud, slightly lumpy idle, louder than normal exhaust, very occasional backfires, not rattley. It was definitely the right dizzy as well. I'm more than familiar with VW timing marks and the IGN timing is spot on - but it's raining, and I can't be arsed to go out and start checking cam timing! It's been like this since I bought it on Thursday. I'm beginning to strongly suspect the timing belt is one tooth out....... it feels for all the world like driving a low compression engine, which would bear out the timing belt theory! I might drop it into the local VW specialist and see if he'll check it for me - by the time I get back from work it's dark! He's cheap and he knows his stuff, and it beats me lying on a wet driveway! It'll be the first time I've ever taken any car to a garage.....Any other input would be much appreciated!

i spose a miss aligned belt sounds likely.although would it make it it noisey??..another digi prob ive found is the inj harness gets dry and cracked, dont really sound like that though

Aye, I think the misaligned belt lets the still-burning mixture out too early, hence the noise...... I'll see though, the garage bloke will probably find something else completely.......

Right - an update. Took it out for a run tonight. A bit slow to start, idle is still a bit crap. It won't even rev freely in neutral (is this a clue). Went on the road - no power at all until it warmed up a bit, then I was able to use 2nd gear as well as first (oh joy!) It is far, far slower than a 1 litre Nova - unusably slow to be honest. Backfired once, but just generally crawled along like a slug. Totally powerless. Is the money still on the slipped cambelt, or does anyone have any ideas? It won't even make it up a hill......
Could it be the coil? I have a spare one.... rotor arm, dizzy, leads etc are all new as I mentioned. No signs of a hg leak. Any and all suggestions are welcome - it's driving me mad! It won't even make it up a mild hill without a big run-up......

If it`s not the belt, it sounds like it`s off a pot. Have you done the usually removing plug caps on idle and seeing if the revs drop?

Yup, it makes no difference - taking it to a bloke at 3pm today for him to have a look. I hate working on cars when it's cold........

I feel deeply ashamed. Guess what the problem was? Two plug leads on the wrong plugs. The only thing I didn't check. I've been building engines since I was 12 and I failed to notice this. Please forgive me......
Runs like a champ now though. Brand new set of leads on it when I bought it at the auction - my guess is the owner bought new leads, fitted them wrongly, then sold it at the auction because he thought he's fucked up something badly. Which means I got a 1500 car for 600 - yay! Apologies for wasting your thinking time, fella's.....
PS. Must get a set of those insulated pliers so you can pull off plug leads while the engine's running.....

Aye - I was thinking "head gasket"..... though it's had a whole new VW exhaust this year, including manifold, so the evil manifold-downpipe bolts should have been easy. But I did not want to do it! I am probably the most chuffed man on earth at the minute!
