Thanks Ben. Sounds like its going to be the fix, if yours has lasted 4 years & still going strong! I've just cut it off with a dremel at work & just finishing it off. Will post up some pictures up if anyone else needs to do this in the future.

So Here's my steps to modifying my clutch cable:

Remove the plastic end, remove 3cm of the plastic cover:

Cut off the outer spring cable flush with a cutting wheel on a dremel - Careful not to cut through the cable! Adjust the speed to a slowish speed & go steady. Cut the cut off piece lengthways, making the spring into individual links to remove them

File off the outer cable to make it smooth:

    Reinstall the plastic end.

Install on car - Here's mine - I still think it is too short!:

    Clutch dipped:

Slight strain relief with a cable tie (temp measure while I think of a better solution

Ben, do you have a pic of yours on your MK2?

Maybe, never thought of that. I've never seen anyone else's setup. But that's how it is mounted on the SEAT Toledo...

yeah nla unfortunatly. however, you can still get the 1Z diesel version which is 22.46+VAT from vw, part number 1L0721335C. since they both use the same gearbox and selector system, you would have to assume it will fit?

the abf cable has a comment of 'self adjust' and 1z does not, so maybe the diesel cable is manual version...

You've kept the cable shift, does the gear stick end just bolt up?

Also did you use the mk2 or mk3 subframes/cross members?

Apologies if if missed these details on the thread

    Many thanks
