Just a quick one. Got the charge pipe welded up. They did an amazing job. Can't even see the join. I also whipped up a tool to make the bead on the end of the pipe. To stop the pipes popping off with the massive boost from the K03. Came out pretty well. And I had a bracket welded on to support it.
Went down to my unit earlier with the intent to start working on the wiring. But ended up just swapping the alloys I had on my mk1 over to the mk2 and then rebuilding all of the brakes on the mini instead as it had developed a squeak, and I couldn't have that. Tomorrow is wiring day.
I hate you Luke you're as bad as Nige always doing productive stuff and the showing off with nice reports on here and Mk2 forum Rant over looking good mate
I have to agree with this. It's not fair! It's always something shiny! I get happy when the thing works, I'd be over the moon if I could produce work like that!
Haha you both will be happy to hear that I didn't get a lot done today then. Wireeeessss Didn't get a lot done though. Wired up the 4 pin coilpack conversion. And started going through the wired so I understood it all before I made any cuts etc. I thought id already figured it all out but got stumped by the ECU power relay on the CE2 fusebox. I thought it was just a normal relay so the orientation of the pins was confusing me. Relay position 3 Digifant Control Unit (30 or 32), Motronic OBD1 Control Unit (109) 1 Main Fusebox Ground 2 unused 3 Main Fusebox Start/Run Power 4 Main Fusebox Battery Power 5 unused 6 To ECU and Engine Electronics I searched for a relay marked 30 to see if the pin locations were different on the relay but they are like any other one. Lots of head scratching later I searched for a relay marked 32 because I had assumed it would be the same orientation. This one will work. Lots of time wasted. Hopefully I don't run into anything else like that tomorrow. Edit: apparently I was looking at the wrong relay when I search for relay 30. A 30 marked will work as well as a 32
I'm colourblind so wiring is the biggest pain ever for me Welding engine stripping all good wiring nightmare Looking well smart nice work as usual Luke
There really isn't much to wiring up the engine. Most of the wires go straight to the ECU so you don't have to touch them. I finished the main engine harness this evening. I just need to decide what to do with the rad fan overrun relay as I had forgot about it since its on the lights loom. Either fit a thermoswitch somewhere on the engine, fit a switch on the dash in place of the thermoswitch, so I can leave the fan on with no ignition live. Or just remove it. Not sure on this one. What have other people with 20v engine done? And I need to add the fuel pump feed to the rear of the car, wire up the boost gauge if there is any wires on it, I haven't looked, and maybe add the wire for the speed sensor on the back on the clocks to the clocks loom. I've added it on the engine loom to the fuse box. It's just a feed for the for idle control on the ECU.
Fuel pump is all wired up now. And I decided to get rid of the radiator fan over run relay and put an over ride switch on the dash, So I can turn the fans on if I need to. But the thermo switch in the radiator will still be operational too. Also mounted the mk4 golf horns as the mk2 one sounds pathetic. Made a mount for the altitude/pressure sensor. And made a mount for the ECU Wiring wise all thats left is to do is the light in the boost gauge and the Diagnostics port. But I will do this when the dash loom is in. The wires are all there I just need to cut them to length. So the wiring is basically all done. Next job is to strip out the interior and engine bay and paint it after drilling a couple of holes for mounting the brake pipes and power steering reservoir. Oh and I need to add the extra mounting points for the seat belts too before painting.
Working towards getting the inside and engine bay painted. Seat belt mounts fitted up Extra roof strengthening bars welded and bonded in. Engine out And I finished welding out the mount for the radiator
Engine bay prepped and premiered. And painted the cross member while waiting in between coats on the engine bay. Interior tomorrow I reckon.
AIP welding supplies in Bridgwater opposite the fire station. Got the interior in primer today. Used some zinc galvanizing spray on all the bare metal bits first though. And then I put a couple of coats of colour on the engine bay. But ran out of paint.
Very happy with this Also got the roll cage, rad support and few brackets in primer. Cant wait to start assembly. Probably should wait a few days for the paint to cure a bit more though.
Going together Started on the brake lines too, after I've done all the brake lines the engine can go back in
Flipping sickning if you ask me I guess you don't have a wife and kids demanding your time and money lol Looks brilliant and as usual very jealous of the quality and speed of your work Keep it going Luke it'll be awesome I'm sure
Haha thanks. I'm really steaming ahead now. Front brake lines finished nice a neat. Stud conversion loctited in and front brakes on and luckily fit under the Borbets Heater box in, Might have to come back out to swap the heater core for the mk2 one instead of the mk4 one as the hoses stick out a bit too much. We will see. And the engine went back in. I will be wrapping the wiring loom, just need to make sure the engine runs first.
This is brilliant! great work mate! your brake lines are nice and neat, any tips? as I'm about to do mine, I've bought a bending tool so hope that will help
