New one isn't that expensive, even from VW.

I tried cleaning my old one, with very unsatisfactory results, by several of the above methods.

If you do get it clean, or replace it, be sure to drain and thoroughly flush the system before you fit it. Otherwise your clean(ed) one will rapidly revert to how your current one looks.

leave to soak in a bucket of hot water with a biowashing tablet overnight, then the next day add a handful of long grain rice to the inside of the tank and give it a good shake
    works wonders the rice

^^^ As said about 3 times above - Use rice and can also steep in bleach after you've removed the rice (swearing possbily required). Cleaned a few using the shakey shakey maraaca method and not found a better way yet.

Couldn't see a thing through this one prior to cleaning it:

Just buy a new one - they're about 10 +VAT from VW minus the cap. I got one with my 24v lump that looked mank, tried evertything but the bleach and it never looked great...and the wet rice is a real pain to get out:lol:
