Hold on, it might actually be possible for a 276bhp Supra to get to 170+mph on a long stretch.

Tak's Merc 430 CLK (4.3L V8 nasp) has book figures of 279bhp/400nm torque, 0-60 in 6.2s and a limited top speed of 155mph. Oh and weighs in at 1555kgs.

Now this thing hits the limiter so amazingly quickly it's unreal. Given the gearing and a lack of a limiter, 170mph would be easily achievable.

So if the young man's supra really does have 276bhp and probably shed loads of turbo torque, i really do believe it could manage close to 170mph.

we have some great banter with the camberley boys next door!

they are struggling with the concept of a quick mk1! even showed them Reeves mk1 @ SPA.

    "yeh but a 911 ain't THAT fast!" :(

325nm of torque... and the merc's top speed is about 130 I think, limited or not!

Oops, my mistake - the merc can do about 165 without the limiter...

To his credit it was actually a 19mm ring-end his mate used.

The lethality of them is sooooo much greater... [:|]

TBH I'm with Gurds on this one. Supras are a good shape for aero, but crucially also have very low frontal area in comparison with a Golf. 170mph doesn't sound that stupid a figure when you take that into account.

Even a MK2 should be slippery enough to hit 140 with 250 or so brake and the right gearing.

Aye, but not 175mph which was what he was claiming! I call foul, and wish to see video evidence, with a pocket sized angle grinder and a 12" elephant wrench in the picture as proof.

top speed is horsepower and aerodynamics, has nothing to do with weight

A fiat coupe will do 155 with only 220bhp, as it's small and slippery,

this guy reckons he's calculated it all and those supras are faster than you think
